About me and my therapy practice
Available to work with you on anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement and relationship difficulties — in person in Edinburgh's New Town, online or by telephone.
I'm Sophia England, an accredited psychotherapist (MBACP Accred) with over 5,000 hours of client experience. I work primarily within the Person Centred tradition, drawing on Psychodynamic concepts to help you explore and understand the roots of how you think, feel and behave.
My approach is warm, collaborative and non-judgemental. I believe you are the expert on your own experience — my role is to offer a safe, confidential space in which you feel genuinely heard and understood.
I have specialist training in trauma (Trauma Enhanced Practice, Levels 2 and 3) and a particular understanding of the pressures of professional and corporate environments, having previously worked in investment banking.
Before establishing Newtown Counselling I worked at Wellspring in Leith and as a telephone counsellor for Trauma Counselling Line Scotland. I hold a PGDip in Counselling from the University of Edinburgh and am an affiliated therapist with Aviva, AXA Health and Bupa.
Sessions cost £65 for 50 minutes. I welcome enquiries from adults of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities and sexualities.
My first session
I'll ask you to complete a self-referral form in advance of an initial session and to consider what you're looking for from counselling and/or psychotherapy. We will talk about this in our first session.
This will give us a chance to consider whether therapy is right for you before continuing. It's an opportunity for you to get a feel for how I work and for us to get a feel for how we work together.
Check out the FAQs page on my website for more detailed answers to common questions about me and my practice. If you think we might be a good fit, I'd love to hear from you.
