About me and my therapy practice
Welcome to my profile and thank you for taking the time to read through what I hope, will be the start of your therapeutic journey.
My private practice, New Day Counselling is based on the outskirts of central Southend on Sea, in a beautiful and tranquil space which can offer therapeutic support that is specifically tailored to support your individual needs.
I work with most presentations relating to mental health and emotional well-being, but specilise in depression, low mood or mood variation whether chronic or first episodes. This may be caused from various life stressors including Loss, bereavment, relationship struggles, relationship breakdowns, divorce, caring for loved ones, trauma, childhood difficulties, attachment or bonding struggles, post natal depression or living with a long term condition such as M.E, CFS or Fibromyalgia.
As an integrative counsellor in private practice and High Intensity Psychotherapeutic Counsellor within the NHS, I am able to drawer on different modalities to suit your aim for therapy and this allows us to work together to explore aspects from past, that may be impacting the here and now, or address concerns for the future.
My core method of working is person-centred, integrated with psychodynamic approaches, such as attachment theory and Transactional Analysis, which can be particularly useful when working with aspects from past which contribute to relational/ interpersonal difficulties, low self-esteem/self worth, or struggling with identity and/or purpose. Similarly emotion focused therapy and behavioural approaches can be utlised to focus on repressed or re-surfaced emotions that can create maladaptive ways of coping, such as avoidance, masking of emotions or obsessive and compulsive traits.
All of the above approaches can serve a greater understanding of self which can support change, growth and empowerment.
Practice description
My journey in understanding mental health began with a great interest in psychology and the science of the mind. I was always intrigued by aspects of personality, why we do what we do, what governs our choices in life and how we respond to other certain personality types and life events.
I qualified as an Integrative Counsellor through four years of initial training 8 years ago, which later led to further development in both psychology and the science of the mind, ending with a FDA in Counselling with focus on the Biopsychosocial Model. Having this broad understanding of various counselling theories and methodologies as well as an understanding of the mind, brain, body connection, allows me to support your understanding of 'self' in a truly holistic way, because as the great Carl Rogers says:
' The curious paradox is when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change'
So how does it work?
The aim of the therapy is to allow you to gain back control of your life, which you may feel is currently lost, whether that be through confidence building, decision making or processing unresolved issues. This is done by allowing you to explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe and non-judgemental environment without fear of rejection or repercussion.
Counselling is a confidential service and as an accreditated member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I ensure that I work within the parameters of their ethical framework, this allows the work to remain safe and ensures your well-being is paramount. There are some exceptions to the rule in regards to confidentiality but this will be fully explained at your initial assessment.
My first session
The working relationship is key to a successful counselling experience, so for this reason I offer a free, no-obligation 15 minute telephone welcome chat just for you to get an idea of how comfortable you feel with me. Should you wish to go ahead, together we would arrange an initial assessment and it is here we can establish your wants and needs, your expectations of therapy, discuss the types of therapy that may best support you and answer any questions you may have.
Should you then feel you would like to continue onto counselling sessions, you can decide what method fits into your your life better, whether that be, face to face, telephone or video call sessions and how often you would like to attend, weekly, fortnightly or even monthly.
I hope you have gained the information to help you decide the right option for you, however, if you are still left with any questions then please do not hesitate to get intouch
