About me and my therapy practice

Hello,

I'm a BACP-Accredited counsellor and psychotherapist, working with individuals and couples. Whatever your situation, therapy can help. We're all capable of developing understanding, and of change, and finding the right therapist can be the beginning of that process. My clients bring varied stories, experiences and aims. You may know what you're seeking, or feel lost or stuck, and need to explore what's behind that feeling, understand it, and find ways forward.

I work with individuals experiencing a wide range of issues, including loss and bereavement, anxiety, depression, relationship and family difficulties, and questions around purpose and identity.

I integrate three 'humanistic' modes of working with individuals and couples - person centred; transactional analysis; gestalt - putting you at the centre, and exploring collaboratively what's going on for you, and what you decide to accept or change.

My work with couples adds Imago relationship therapy principles and practices. You may find that you're struggling to communicate - having the same arguments, and getting nowhere; or living with unspoken resentments. You may each be struggling to be heard, or to recover from betrayal. Our closest relationships often bring to the surface patterns that are difficult to recognise on our own, so, working together, we can begin to explore these with curiosity rather than blame, creating space for each of you to be heard and understood. I hold a COSRT-Accredited Diploma in Couples and Relationship Therapy.

Prior to my counselling training, I worked in the NHS for many years as a speech and language therapist, with a clinical specialism in autism, working within a diagnostic team. I bring specialist experience, skill and sensitivity to therapeutic conversations with my autistic clients, and also work with family members of autistic people. I have extensive experience working with young people, and work with teenagers aged 18+.

Practice description

I know from my own experience of counselling, and my work with clients, that therapeutic conversations within a safely contained relationship and setting can be transformative. I enjoy a varied and diverse counselling practice, and offer my clients attentive curiosity so that over time, old beliefs and patterns emerge, feelings are noticed and tolerated, and new understandings and changes can follow.

We can all find life hacks and read about quick gains and solutions, but in my experience, it is the engaging over time in a therapeutic relationship that brings about real change. This is what I believe brings greater understanding and ease, and this is what I offer.

Through Imago-based therapy, couples who are stuck can learn new ways of communicating with each other, which allows real potential for new learning and connection.

I see clients in-person in my Steyning practice room, and offer Walk & Talk, and online sessions.

My first session

I offer prospective clients a free, 20-minute phonecall before an initial meeting; or the cost of the first in-person session is reduced to £20. Attending that initial session doesn't commit you to returning.

Your first session is a chance for us to get a sense of each other, and for you to gain an idea of how we can work together.

I know that a first session can feel daunting, so I offer a space in which you feel safe enough to tell me as much about yourself as you feel comfortable with. I guide that conversation, as I find out a bit about you, and what's brought you to seek counselling. And of course I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about how I work, as we discuss what your therapy might look like.

We'll also go through the parameters of the therapy work, so that you're clear about important issues such as confidentiality and other boundaries.
