About me and my therapy practice
About My Practice: Therapy with me is a real investment in your most critical asset: your psychological resilience. In a world that demands constant performance, both in your professional life and at home, finding a safe, non-judgmental space to untangle complex emotions and behavioural patterns is crucial. I offer a practical, integrative approach to counselling. Anchored by the robust framework of Transactional Analysis, sessions with me are designed to help you achieve true, lasting change.
Specialised Expertise: I am uniquely positioned to support people in high pressure roles. In addition to extensive experience in the NHS and private practice, my time serving as a trustee for major Sheffield cultural institutions means that I possess a deep, nuanced appreciation of the pressures that contribute to burnout, low self-esteem and low self-confidence. This background is particularly relevant for those in leadership roles, and those in the digital industries and creative arts, where the boundary between self and work can be eroded, resulting in issues such as moral injury and identity loss.
What to Expect:
• Therapy sessions with me are collaborative and tailored to your specific pace.
• Whether you are seeking short-term support for a specific life transition or long-term psychotherapy to resolve deep-seated patterns, in your initial sessions you will finally have the space to speak openly and safely. From this we set valid, life-enhancing goals.
• Though your distress may manifest as anxiety, depression, past trauma, stress, anger or family issues, we work together to uncover its real underlying causes.
• Having done this, we use proven, effective therapeutic models to enhance your self-awareness and transform patterns that no longer serve you into a realistic, positive template for a better life.
• Through all this, I help you develop a practical toolkit that you can use to build a future of enduring purpose and resilience in which you don’t just survive, you thrive.

Testimonial by JF:
I looked very successful on the outside, but my ‘inner critic’ was making me feel trapped. It was getting harder and harder to keep up a front, but I was scared to let anyone know how I was feeling. How could I show ‘weakness’ when everyone relied on me? I was terrified of being ‘found out’. Counselling with Mike was a big step for me but looking back now I wish I’d done it sooner. His warm style meant that for the first time I felt able to stop ‘masking’, be open with what I was feeling, and not worry about letting anyone down. Also, he really ‘understood’ the constant pressure I was facing, not just professionally but also at home. Thanks to him and the work we’ve done I don’t feel so lonely, as I can cope better with the demands of my life and be open when I’m struggling. I still have challenges, but I can face them. I feel like a different man.
Testimonial by AP:
In senior leadership, feeling isolated can be as draining as the unending, high-stakes decision-making. I didn’t need a therapist who just listened: I needed someone who understood the pressure and risk I face every day because of the choices I have to make. I did a lot of research before I chose Mike as a therapist, and after a chat with him I knew that, because of his background, he already spoke my language in a way that previous therapists haven’t. His TA-informed approach gave me a logical framework that helped me untangle the patterns driving my burnout, patterns that I couldn’t see before working with him. We’ve gone deep, but it’s been more than worth it: therapy with Mike has been one of the best investments in myself and my future that I’ve ever made.

About me and my therapy practice
Are you struggling with a pattern of behaviour or a relationship that you know is harmful, but you can’t seem to move on, or change things for the better? Through working with you in a safe, accepting way I can help you gain a fresh perspective on what has been troubling you. Building on this, we can work together to help you make positive, lasting changes to your behaviour and state of mind.
As an integrative counsellor I use a variety of approaches, with my main approach being transactional analysis. Transactional analysis is useful in helping us understand how past experiences can negatively affect us in the present; by using it to work collaboratively, we can develop practical tools and techniques that, going forward, will help you to live your best life.
When not working in private practice I am a counsellor in the NHS, where I work with patients with a wide variety of issues.
Before working as a counsellor, I worked in industry and as a college lecturer, and have had both front-line and strategic roles. This means I have an extra appreciation of the issues that can arise from the demands of high-pressure work.
Also, my background in the creative arts means I am especially aware of the issues faced both by people working in the creative industries and those for whom creativity is a central part of their identity.
I am happy to talk by phone beforehand, and to answer any questions you may have regarding how I can help.
I also offer a free, no obligation initial consultation of 25 minutes in which you can meet me to discuss your needs.
Fees:
My standard rate is £70 per 50 minute session.
£65 per 50 minute session for long-term clients when paying for 5 sessions in advance.
£60 per 50 minute session for students.
£60 per 50 minute session for recent graduates: if you have graduated less than two years ago and have not found a job in the area of your field of study, you can take advantage of this.

Testimonial by S.C.:
'I had long-term counselling with Mike, and he is a warm, non-judgemental and compassionate counsellor who helped me to work through issues that had been causing me distress for most of my life. Not only did he allow me to explore my feelings and learn more about myself, he also helped me to find ways to achieve my goal of being more honest and authentic in my personal relationships. My confidence and self-esteem have improved dramatically, and I have made huge changes in my life for the better. Most importantly for me, he helped me to get to a place of self-acceptance, and I feel comfortable with who I am for the first time in my life.'
Testimonial by S.T.:
'When I first met Mike I was an unhappy late middle aged bloke who was prone to frustrated outbursts. Working with Mike I began to understand more about where that emotion was coming from. As a result I am better able to manage it which helps me and those around me. Mike did this by being very open-minded and seeing things in my situation that I couldn’t see. He also has very broad knowledge, so the conversations were energising and thought-provoking and something to look forward to despite the difficult subject matter.'
Testimonial by S.R.:
'Just wanted to touch base and say thanks for everything, and to let you know all is good. Completely transformed my life. I'm feeling miles better. I've even stopped smoking and started back at the gym with my wife as something we can do together. I've got more energy; really high on life at the minute. Thanks again.’

About me and my therapy practice
Are you a qualified counsellor that’s looking for a fresh perspective on your practice?
Are you a counselling student that’s looking to become an insightful, effective counsellor with a rewarding career?
Through working with you in a safe, accepting way, I can help you truly enhance your work as a counsellor.
My approach to supervision is designed to help each supervisee feel safe enough to honestly examine their own practice; this is founded on a recognition of your own unique qualities as a therapist. With a trusting relationship established, we can co-operate in a way that affirms the good work that you do, while also offering constructive challenge where appropriate. Supervision with me isn’t about meeting some external idea of the perfect counsellor; it’s about working together to help you become the counsellor *you* are meant to be.
In addition to having my own private practice and working as a counsellor in the NHS, I have also spent time working in the commercial sector. This means that I have a strong insight into what it takes to build a career as a counsellor. Sometimes even the best therapists can struggle to be adequately compensated; as part of supervision, I can work with you to help ensure that you are in the best position possible to earn a living from your hard work.
