About me and my therapy practice
Hi there, my name is Sonia Lucas and I am a professionally qualified and experienced therapeutic counsellor, disordered eating and EFT therapist, counselling supervisor.
With over 20 years of experience working across social care, the NHS, health organisations and private practice, I have supported many people as an integrative therapist. I have a clinical background across several settings experiencing the full breadth of human challenges, something that continues to inform how I work with every adult client I meet.
I have seen how each person that arrives in therapy has a unique life story, shaped by their own experiences, relationships and sense of self. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. From our very first meeting, I take time to understand you, who you are, what has brought you to therapy, and what you are hoping for, so that the support I offer is genuinely tailored to you.
Practice description
I work integratively which means I draw on person-centred and psychodynamic approaches and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). This range of tools allows me to respond flexibly and thoughtfully to what each person needs, rather than fitting you into a fixed framework. I view your story as a puzzle and our aim is to work in a collaborative way, piecing the shapes together. I work alongside you, combining what you know about yourself with what I may notice or offer, so that together we can find the most helpful path forward.
I support adults of all ages and from diverse social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety and depression, low self-esteem, bereavement, work related issues, relationship difficulties, childhood trauma, sexual identity, drug and alcohol dependency, sexual abuse, chronic illness and disordered eating. I also have a particular interest in working with women navigating menopause, endometriosis and the conditions that so often accompany these diagnoses, areas where emotional wellbeing and physical experience are deeply interconnected.
If you are wondering whether therapy might help, I warmly invite you to get in touch.
My first session
What to Expect
Taking the first step towards therapy can feel daunting so I want to make the process as straightforward and welcoming as possible.
A Free Initial Chat
I invite every new client to a free, informal 20 minute conversation. This is simply an opportunity to talk a little about what has brought you to seek support, with no pressure or commitment. Everything we discuss from this very first contact is confidential. The only exception to this is if at any point I have serious concern for your safety or the safety of others, in which case we would always look to navigate that together.
The Assessment Appointment:
If you feel ready to take the next step, we can arrange an assessment appointment of up to one hour. This gives us more time to explore in greater depth what you are experiencing and what you are hoping therapy might offer. It is also a valuable opportunity for us both to get a sense of whether we are a good fit to work together. There is nothing you need to prepare or complete beforehand. I may take some brief notes during our time together, but these are anonymised and remain strictly confidential.
If at any point you feel another therapist or service might suit you better, I am very happy to help with a referral or recommendation.
Moving Forward
Following a successful assessment, we can look at availability and plan a way forward that works for you. I offer 50 minute sessions and, for those who would benefit from more time, 75 minute sessions are also available. Sessions are typically weekly as continuity is an important part of the therapeutic process, though I understand that life is busy and I will always aim to work around your availability and commitments. The assessment appointment is charged at the same rate as a standard counselling session.
Most importantly, this is your therapy. We go at your pace. No pressure.
