About me and my therapy practice

As a counsellor, I work with adults of all ages who bring a wide variety of real-life issues including historical trauma and the most complex psychological needs. My training to be a psychotherapist at York St. John University was humanistic and integrative. This means I now bring strategies and ideas from a variety of therapeutic approaches into my work with clients. You, as an individual, and your unique personal story, will always be the focus of our work. I will listen carefully to the narrative you bring, treat it with the utmost respect and help you gain insight, enabling you to make the changes that are right for you.

Practice description

I provide a warm, welcoming, non-judgemental space for you to work through personal issues with my support as a qualified, experienced counsellor. Therapy isn’t about being given answers by a clever therapist. It’s about uncovering and practising new ways of meeting obstacles, drawing on the hidden, deep resources in you our work together will help you find. Before becoming a psychotherapist, I had a long career as a nurse in the NHS and as a teacher. I bring valuable experience and familiarity with these sectors into my counselling practice.

My first session

When you enquire about therapy with me, we’ll arrange a time to have an initial chat lasting up to 20 minutes, at no charge. This will give you a chance to talk about what brings you to the point of looking for therapy and what you’d like to gain from it. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have to help you decide whether you’d like to proceed towards a first session with me.

Availability

I currently have availability to take new supervisees. I work Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, during the day and into the evening.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a humanistic and integrative counsellor with a strong person-centred base and I offer supervision from the same perspective. This means, in supervision sessions, I take a fundamentally person-centred approach focusing on your developmental and support needs, combining this with the necessary functions of supervision which protect the interests of clients.

As a counsellor, I work with adults of all ages who bring a wide variety of real-life issues. I currently work as a volunteer and Associate Counsellor at a charity providing affordable counselling and also, more recently, at a not-for-profit company counselling clients with historical trauma and with the most complex psychological needs.

Practice description

In line with my approach to counselling, I offer supervisee-centred supervision, characterised by the consistent provision of the core conditions and the development and maintenance of meaningful relationship. I aim to make our sessions mutually enjoyable explorations of your work with clients which you experience as supportive learning opportunities. I love helping practitioners develop and deepen their practice, drawing on my own experience and knowledge. We’ll make reference to theory, when appropriate, to illuminate aspects of your client work but, essentially, you’ll have the benefit of discussing your work with a committed and experienced counsellor who appreciates the value of doing this. Supervision with me will offer you an alternative perspective on your work whilst meeting the essential normative, formative and restorative functions of supervision.

My first session

When you enquire about supervision with me, we’ll arrange a time to talk (at no charge) and explore whether we’ll be able to work together effectively. I’ll be keen to understand what you’re looking for from your supervision and I’ll aim to give you an impression of how I work with supervisees. If we decide to continue, during our first formal supervision session, we’ll talk about some ground rules and boundaries, how you like to receive feedback and suggestions and whether you like to have a particular structure or agenda to your sessions. Afterwards, I’ll use this to inform my drafting of a contract which I’ll invite you to comment on and agree.
