About me and my therapy practice

Welcome, I’m Kathy Shaw, an integrative, trauma-informed therapist working with adults and young people who are thoughtful, capable, and emotionally aware — yet find themselves struggling with self-doubt, inner criticism, anxiety, overwhelm, or a sense of being stuck in life.

Many people come to therapy because life feels heavy, confusing, or relentless — and that experience deserves understanding and compassionate support. You might be coping well on the outside while feeling uncertain or unsafe inside — unsure of how to move forward or how to make sense of your internal experience.

My approach focuses on understanding your inner world with warmth and clarity rather than trying to immediately “fix” or change you. Together, we explore emotions, beliefs, protective habits, and patterns that once helped you cope but now feel limiting.

Clients often tell me they feel deeply heard and genuinely understood, and begin to notice internal shifts that ripple into everyday life — not just insight, but real movement towards self-trust, clarity, and a greater sense of safety. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, transitions, or unresolved patterns, I offer a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can be seen and make sense of your experience.

I offer counselling in Northwich and online, and work collaboratively with you to pace the process in a way that feels right. If you’re curious about how counselling could help you, you don’t need all the answers — you just need a willingness to explore what’s going on for you right now.

Practice description

Practice Description

My practice offers a calm, confidential space where you can slow things down and explore what’s happening for you at a deeper level. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and emotionally aware, yet feel held back by anxiety, self-doubt, inner criticism, or a sense of emotional unsafety. Often, they are functioning well on the outside while struggling internally.

I work in a trauma-informed, relational, and integrative way. Rather than trying to fix or change you, therapy focuses on understanding your inner world with compassion and clarity. Together, we explore thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and protective patterns — including those that once helped you cope but may now feel limiting. This work supports meaningful internal shifts, not just insight, helping you move towards greater self-trust, clarity, and emotional safety.

My background is in education and counselling, and I bring over 15 years of experience in helping roles, alongside more than 3,000 clinical hours.

Alongside therapy, I am a qualified clinical supervisor and offer supervision to trainee counsellors, experienced practitioners, and professionals requiring external supervision. My supervision work is relational and reflective, primarily informed by the Seven-Eyed Model, allowing space to consider the therapeutic work, the practitioner’s internal experience, ethical practice, and the wider context.

I work full-time in private practice with adults and teenagers, offering sessions face-to-face in Northwich and online.

My first session

First Session – What to Expect

The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and for you to experience what it feels like to work with me. It’s a gentle starting point rather than a commitment to ongoing therapy.

We’ll spend time talking about what has brought you to counselling, what you’re currently finding difficult, and what you hope might change. You don’t need to have everything worked out or know exactly what to say — we can take things at a pace that feels right for you. There is no pressure to share more than you feel ready to.

I will also explain how I work, answer any questions you may have, and talk through practicalities such as confidentiality, boundaries, and session structure. This helps create a sense of safety and clarity from the outset.

The first session is as much for you as it is for me. It’s a space for you to notice whether you feel comfortable, heard, and supported, and whether my approach feels like a good fit for you. Therapy works best when the relationship feels safe and collaborative.

I offer a free 20-minute initial consultation, either by phone or video call, which allows you to briefly discuss your needs, hopes, and expectations before deciding whether you’d like to book a first session. There is no obligation to continue unless you feel comfortable and satisfied that I am the right therapist for you.

About me and my therapy practice

Clinical Supervision

I am a qualified clinical supervisor offering supervision face-to-face and online to trainee counsellors, experienced practitioners, and professionals who require external supervision as part of their role.

My approach to supervision is relational, reflective, and supportive, grounded in the belief that effective supervision offers more than case discussion alone. I work primarily within the Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision, as it allows space to explore all aspects of the therapeutic work — including the client’s process, the therapeutic relationship, the practitioner’s internal experience, and the wider organisational and ethical context.

Supervision with me provides a safe, thoughtful space to reflect on clinical work with curiosity and care. I aim to support supervisees to deepen self-awareness, strengthen ethical practice, and feel more grounded and confident in their professional role. Whether you are in training or have many years of experience, supervision is paced to meet you where you are.

I work full-time in private practice and currently offer supervision to practitioners working with adults and teenagers. My original training is in Person-Centred Counselling, and my practice is integrative, informed by training and experience in CBT, mindfulness-based approaches, and coaching. This allows flexibility while remaining rooted in relational depth and emotional safety.

Alongside my clinical work, I am a qualified lecturer and previously worked in Further Education, teaching Health and Social Care. This background supports my work with trainee counsellors and professionals who are balancing learning, responsibility, and practice development.

I offer a free 20-minute initial consultation, which gives us the opportunity to explore your needs, expectations, and whether my supervision style feels like a good fit for you. There is no obligation to continue unless you feel comfortable and supported.

Supervision Practice Description

My supervision practice offers a reflective, supportive space for trainee counsellors, qualified practitioners, and professionals who require external supervision. I work in a relational, trauma-informed way, recognising that supervision is not only about case discussion, but about supporting the practitioner as a whole.

I primarily work within the Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision, as this framework allows us to reflect on all aspects of the work. This includes the client’s process, the therapeutic relationship, your internal responses, ethical considerations, and the wider organisational or systemic context. Supervision is paced collaboratively, allowing space for curiosity, honesty, and professional growth.

Supervision with me aims to support ethical confidence, reflective capacity, and a more grounded relationship with your work. I offer a free 20-minute initial consultation, providing an opportunity to explore your needs and decide whether my supervision style feels like the right fit for you, with no obligation to continue.

My first session

First Supervision Session – What to Expect

The first supervision session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and to establish a safe, collaborative working relationship. It is a space to explore your current role, your experience level, and what you are hoping for from supervision, rather than a test or assessment of your practice.

We will spend time discussing the context of your work, including the client groups you work with, any organisational requirements, and your current supervision needs. This may include talking about areas you feel confident in, as well as aspects of your work you find more challenging or are curious about. You are welcome to bring clinical material if you wish, though this is not essential in the first session.

I will also explain how I work as a supervisor, including the use of the Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision, and we will talk through practical and ethical considerations such as confidentiality, boundaries, record keeping, and supervision agreements.

The first session is a shared decision-making space. It allows you to get a sense of whether you feel comfortable, supported, and able to think openly within the supervisory relationship, and whether my approach feels like a good fit for you. Effective supervision relies on trust, openness, and collaboration.

I offer a free 20-minute initial consultation, which provides an opportunity to briefly discuss your supervision needs before arranging a first session. There is no obligation to continue unless you feel confident that this is the right supervisory relationship for you.
