About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Louise, a counsellor and psychotherapist providing in-person sessions in Alnwick and Newcastle-upon-Tyne and online across the UK. Having grown up near the Scottish border, I have spent my adult life in Edinburgh and London before returning to Northumberland some years ago.
I offer a protected space where you can feel safe and deeply heard, where we can gently explore your experience and transform difficulties into self-awareness and choice. Together we will search, not for a fixed idea of health decided by somebody else, but for change which will make the difference in your life.
With 20 years experience working therapeutically in a range of contexts, I will help if you are struggling with your sense of who you are and experiencing difficulties in relationships with others - for example, self-criticism, feelings of guilt, anger, needing to please others, or feeling devalued, stuck and frustrated.
My specialisms are around early and complex trauma, experiences of exclusion and isolation, difficult formative relationships and grief of all sorts.
Working with body symptoms which may have a psychological dimension, or exploring the impact of health related issues is also my area of experience and insight.
Practice description
You are welcome to request a free 15 min telephone, video call or in-person meeting before deciding whether to book an initial appointment.
I offer both short term and long term therapy. I find that weekly sessions are the most effective structure for successful therapy and I offer a lower rate for weekly bookings.
Two low-cost spaces are available as part of my commitment to make my practice fair and accessible.
Both locations have stairs leading to the therapy room. If this presents a barrier for you, please get in touch so that we can find alternative arrangements.
My training background
I hold a level 7 diploma in Psychotherapy and a diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling. I have undergone further training with the NAOS Institute in working with trauma.
I work with a relational model of therapy, and am informed by somatic approaches and mindfulness.
I hold a Masters degree in Complementary Therapies with a specialisation in Bodywork, from the School of Integrated Health, University of Westminster, having worked for many years as a trauma-informed massage therapist, and have studied Process Work and Authentic Movement.
My first session
The first appointment is a 'big picture' session where we will talk through some questions to gather broad information about your concerns, your health and your life experience. This can help us both to see how to focus your therapy effectively.
From there we will explore your experiences in more depth, as and when you are ready to do so. We will focus on the issues which bring you to therapy, what your life is like in the present, and develop our understanding of the roots of your difficulties.
Sometimes it may be hard to find the right words or you may feel stuck in the old familiar stories. I offer creative ways of working, including sand tray, drawing, painting and clay, as well as exploring your experience through your body or through your dreams.
Through useful models of thinking, self-care strategies and in the crucible of the therapeutic relationship, we will identify and support real change which moves you towards your therapy goal.
