About me and my therapy practice
Having given over 4,200 hours of therapy to a huge range of clients I have learnt that no two clients are ever the same.
I want to understand what your unique experience of life has been like, and how I can help you with it.
Whatever your current challenges, however deep-rooted or short-term, I will be with you to explore them, feel them, understand them and work out how we can help overcome them.
As well as my private practice I have worked with clients in a university counselling service, a low-cost service, and a drama school for which I set up and ran a counselling service for 4 1/2 years.
Prior to working as a therapist I worked in the theatre business for 17 years. Although my role now is completely different, I see some of the skills I developed in my previous work as helpful to the therapeutic experience: for instance finding creative ways of allowing someone to imagine the life they want to have, or even to rehearse/practice the kinds of relationship they feel they want to develop in the outside world.
As an integrative therapist, I will help you integrate your thoughts, feelings. body and behaviour to work together and better serve your needs. This often involves making connections between your current difficulties and your previous experiences.
By exploring these patterns it usually becomes easier to see the solutions and, perhaps, to begin to experiment with doing things differently.
And I'll be with you every step of the way.
My first session
A first session with a new therapist will often induce a mixture of nervousness and excitement for both of us.
When we first meet I typically outline some of the practicalities of working with me, then give you as much space as you like to give me an overview of what's brought you here and a bit about your background, and then with a few minutes at the end to discuss how the session has been for you and - if you're ready to - to decide whether you wish to carry on.
Finding the right person is very important; it's completely fine by me if you decide you wish to 'audition' several to find the right person for you.
