About me and my therapy practice

My name is Denise, and I am a BACP registered Psychodynamic Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor.

I have many years of experience working in services such as homelessness, probation and the NHS, supporting people who are experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including addiction, dual diagnosis and personality disorders. This experience has given me a strong understanding of the emotional pain and life experiences that often bring people into therapy.

I understand that looking for a therapist can feel like a daunting process, and it is important that you find someone you feel comfortable with. I believe that the foundation of good therapy is a safe, trusting and authentic relationship where you feel heard, understood and not judged.

I offer a confidential and supportive space where we can think together about what is troubling you. We would usually meet once a week at the same time, and we would work at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

Therapy can at times feel challenging, but it can also be a deeply meaningful and transformative process. I wish you all the best in your therapy journey, whether that is with me or with another therapist.

Practice description

I am an integrative psychotherapist and supervisor with a Master’s degree in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and I am currently in the final year of a Professional Doctorate in Psychodynamic Counselling. My work is grounded in psychodynamic thinking, while also drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches to ensure therapy is tailored to each person’s individual needs.

I originally trained in Person-Centred and Existential Counselling at the University of Essex while working in homelessness services and the probation service. While this training provided me with a strong foundation, I wanted to understand more about the deeper and often unconscious processes that can influence our thoughts, feelings and relationships in adulthood, which led me to further training in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

I have many years of experience working with people experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including addiction, dual diagnosis and personality disorders, across services such as homelessness, probation and the NHS. I have a particular interest in working with addiction and recovery.

I have also worked as a university lecturer teaching counselling students and I am passionate about clinical supervision and supporting therapists in their professional development.

I aim to offer a safe, reflective and confidential space where we can work together to understand your experiences and explore the possibility of change.

My first session

I offer a free initial telephone consultation. This gives us an opportunity to introduce ourselves and to talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you are hoping to gain from the process. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions and to get a sense of whether you feel comfortable working with me, as I understand that finding the right therapist is important.

If we both feel that we can work together, we will arrange an assessment session. The assessment gives us the opportunity to explore in more depth what has brought you to therapy, some background information, and what you may need from the therapeutic process. This helps us to think about how we might work together going forward.

If we decide to continue, we will agree a regular weekly time and day for your sessions.

The number of sessions is entirely up to you. Some people find that short-term therapy (around 6–12 sessions) is enough to work through a specific issue, while others prefer longer-term therapy where there is more time and space to explore themselves and their experiences more deeply. This is something we can review together as therapy progresses.
