About me and my therapy practice

Couple and individual Therapy

We all have moments in our lives when we feel stuck and see a need for a change. Therapy provides a safe space in which we can look at and make sense of how things are now, before exploring ways to change them in the future. The issues which bring you to therapy may be long-term difficulties or recent incidents which cause problems in your relationships, sense of fulfilment at work or with your general well-being. You may also feel that you are searching to attain your full potential and would like to explore ways to achieve this. This provides the basic framework for us to work together at which our therapeutic relationship is the centre.

About Me

I am an experienced and accredited Psychotherapist based in Southend who work with both adults and couples. I am an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I hold a Post-Graduate Diploma from the University of East London in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am also DBS checked to an enhanced level.

Practice description

My Practice

I offer therapy of an integrative nature. This mostly integrates Person-Centred therapy with Psychodynamic therapy, which means looking at what is going on for you now and sometimes looking at the past to bring understanding to the present. The idea is that much of our mental life is unconscious therefore we are unconsciously repeating certain patterns which could obstruct the development of healthy relationships. For example, do you keep getting into the same argument with someone; making similar mistakes or getting into familiar situations. Therapy is a place to bring the unconscious driving force of these recurring behaviours onto the surface. We will also reference any observations arises from our therapeutic relationship.

It is a talking therapy but sometimes I may introduce other therapies such as art and CBT.

At the core of this work, I will treat you with compassion and honesty in a non-judgmental environment so that we can explore collaboratively your thoughts and feelings fully in a safe and confidential place. For example, we can explore how you may have developed certain beliefs, how these affect you and the options for changes.

Experience

I have over 2,700 hours of clinical experience. Alongside private practice, I worked for many years within NGOs and charity sector counselling clients facing difficult issues and events that have impacted on their mental health and wellbeing. I have worked extensively with people who are struggling with the following issues:

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Panic attacks

• Low self-esteem

• Trauma / PTSD

• OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

• Eating disorder

• Self-harm and suicidal thoughts

• Survivors of domestic/sexual abuse

• Bereavement and loss (including relationship break-down)

• Family / Relationship issues

• LGBTI, cultural and sexual identity

My first session

Introductory session

I will offer a 10-15 minutes free introductory consultation either via telephone, online or face-to-face. This session is an opportunity for us to be introduced and we can talk through queries you might have about therapy, or the way I work. Following our conversation there is no commitment for you to book any further sessions with me, I understand how important finding the right therapist is. If you would like to begin working together we will book in our first session at this point.

Beginning Therapy

Our first session will be slightly different from the rest of therapy. Normally, I will follow your lead but in this first session, I’ll take the lead to ask you questions. The aim is to explore what brings you to therapy and if it makes sense for us to work together. You can ask any questions and if you would like to work together we will agree a rough plan of what that will look like.

We will arrange a weekly day and time for our sessions, which will always last 50 minutes.

Number of Sessions

The number of sessions you have is entirely up to you, although I tend to work long term. Some people find that they have achieved what they wanted after a few sessions whereas others will want to engage in longer-term work, depending on the nature of the issues bringing you to therapy.

When we are discussing our therapeutic plan in you first session we can discuss this to get an idea of what might work for you. We will do regular reviews on how things are going and you can decide when it feels right to end.

I offer face-to-face therapy in Southend and online sessions via Zoom.
