About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Bernadette, and I provide on-line and face to face counselling for individuals and couples. I am based in Cardiff and West Dorset and offer counselling within a therapy room, on-line or location of your choice.

I am an experienced Person- Centred Counsellor meaning that I provide an environment that helps you explore issues and problems, feelings, beliefs and behaviours in a way that enables you to move towards fulfilling your potential.

Finding the right counsellor can be daunting. I offer a warm welcome and a safe and supportive environment. I will not judge, regardless of what you bring to the session, and this will help build a trustworthy relationship where you are able to disclose what is troubling you. Your counselling journey can help you recognise the bigger picture, make connections and support you towards the life you want to live. This journey is known as ‘self- actualisation’, which I believe is achievable for everyone.

I provide counselling to individuals, and my ambition is to see people grow and develop. I have met and supported many incredible clients experiencing anxiety, depression, low mood, loss & grief, OCD, anger and traumatic life events. Additionally, I am an experienced relationship counsellor, and use a blend of Person- Centred and Solution Focused Therapies and Neuro- Linguistic- programming (Coaching). I provide a toolkit of resources which support couples to reduce conflict, improve communication and achieve agreed goals.

If you would like to find out further information, I am always happy to chat beforehand to explore if counselling is right for you.

I ascribe to the ethical value of providing clients with effective and confidential therapy, and work in accordance with the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists code of ethics.

Practice description

I support individuals by helping you explore problems that are troubling you now, and experiences from your past that perhaps contribute to current fears, worries or anxieties. I also provide creative counselling, meaning you can explore issues using tools that support you to express experiences unique to you.

Sometimes, we think the same thoughts and experience the same emotions over and over again and become trapped in negative patterns. Creative counselling shifts us out of these patterns, leading to fresh perspectives and insights. Creative tools are not essential, however, if you would like to give it a try, please let me know.

Shells and pebbles enable you to explore different parts of your ‘self’. This is helpful as sometimes we get ‘stuck’ as our thoughts and emotions are in conflict. When you select and place objects, it is very revealing; providing you with insights that develop your self- awareness. Using tools helps when it is hard to put things into words in a way that accurately describes how you are feeling, especially if you are struggling to make sense of them yourself. Using shells and pebbles can be easier than talking in instances when you naturally want to clam up about something difficult.

Mood Cards are a way to help you explore and identify emotions like joy, sadness, defensiveness, anxiety, stress or anger. Using these supports you to identify and make sense of your thoughts, behaviours and emotional responses to a variety of situations.

Couples and relationship counselling helps both partners to better identify and clarify habitual and unhelpful patterns of communication and behaviours. The counselling I offer is a combination of Person Centred and Solution Focused Approaches combined with Neuro- Linguistic- Programing. This combination supports couples to safely share their experience of the relationship and begin using tools and resources to identify solutions and work towards achieving long term relationship goals and ambitions.

My first session

Once we have agreed a time and location, I will email you a counselling contract, and this details what you can expect from sessions, and explains that what we talk about remains confidential.

I provide a very warm welcome and create an environment that is based on trust and safety. The session will begin by you having opportunity to tell me what is troubling you. It is up to you what you would like to talk about, and the extent to which you talk in the first session. I provide a completely non- judgmental environment, and will support you in exploring issues and problems.

For relationship and couples counselling, I provide the same warm, welcoming, trusted and safe environment; and provide a space where you are able to begin to identify and clarify relationship issues and think about your individual relationship ambitions and shared goals. From the first session, I will recommend take away tasks that help you both to positively review, reflect and gain valuable insights in between therapy sessions.
