About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I’m Alyson. I am a person-centred counsellor in South Manchester working with women and neurodivergent adults. Alongside my private practice, I work as a therapist in the charity sector with women who have survived sexual violence and historic abuse. My approach is trauma-informed which means that you only share with me what you are comfortable speaking about and we work at your pace: your autonomy and psychological safety are fundamental. I also work with neurodivergent adults of all ages and genders. My understanding and experience of ADHD and autism is extensive, and counselling can focus on a range of issues from late diagnosis, masking and burnout, to the overlap with relational trauma, or the added dimensions of parenting and menopause.
Whilst these are my specialist areas, I offer general counselling to adults and young adults 18+ and am always happy to have an initial chat. I meet my clients with openness and compassion, and am skilled at noticing patterns and making connections. This can help reframe harmful narratives and bring clarity, allowing something to shift so that you feel less overwhelmed and better able to move forward with your life.
Prior to qualifying as a psychotherapeutic counsellor in 2020, I worked as an English language teacher abroad and with families seeking asylum in the UK. I worked for many years with unpaid carers, particularly those caring for a child with additional needs or disabilities or a family member with dementia. I have also worked with boarding school survivors and the long-term psychological impact of this early attachment rupture.
I am a white British woman of mixed European heritage and use the pronouns she/her. I work in accordance with BACP's ethical framework and receive monthly clinical supervision, and I regularly access peer support and ongoing professional training.
* Much of my work is remote but I also have some limited face-to-face availability. Please email me if interested and we can discuss options.
