About me and my therapy practice
I am an integrative counsellor able to work with Children (3+), Young People and Adults based in the North Wales region. I am able to offer a collaborative, trusting space to explore life’s hurdles and navigate a path together to a more fulfilling future.
I have an extensive amount of experience working with a range of presenting issues, particularly trauma-based, with children, young people and adults, and have also worked with adults struggling with addiction as a Therapeutic Intervention Worker. Due to working in the specialist field of trauma, I have received lots of training to adhere to a trauma-informed way of working with clients. I have also worked with mental health charities and services such as Mind and Parabl, and have supported those experiencing mental health difficulties in the workplace through the iCan project.
However I am not the expert, you are. Together we can explore, challenge, and overcome the hurdles life has developed along the way for us to get to the finish line, one hurdle at a time. With your willingness to engage with life’s difficulties and developed trust within our sessions, together we will grasp a way of navigating through your life events, and un-do these knots in order to create a new pathway of discovery.
Metaphorically speaking consider this…Therapy is like finding a pearl of wisdom in your shell, and that change begins from within. Alongside working together, I can ensure that what I can offer you as a counsellor, will enable sustainable changes in your life to start living, not just exist.
Change is always possible and requires you to take that first step, and I will look forward to greeting you on the other side.
Thank you.
Practice description
My initial training in 2018 qualified me in Person-Centred practice, where I then completed a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy studies in 2019 to further enhance my knowledge. Since, I have expanded my therapeutic skills by completing Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in 2022 and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2024, to be able to offer a multi-faceted way of working for my clients. *Please note, my EMDR training can only be utilised with adults at this time.*
I also completed my training to work with children in 2021, and now have over 450+ hours of experience of working with children aged 3 upwards mainly specialising in sexual trauma.
Although my roots from the person-centred approach will always be the core of my practice, I am able to offer you the fundamental elements of a client-centred relationship, but also be able to offer you a cognitive structure to support you to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and reach your own goals in therapy. Each session will always be led by you, and will therefore be your choice of which modality you would like to engage with, or not, throughout our time together.
I often work creatively with my clients using imagery, metaphors, and analogies to break things down further into language that is able to be understood and be meaningful within therapy, which again highlights being able to offer you a range of modalities to suit your needs. I am trained in other therapeutic techniques such as REWIND which is best applied to PTSD symptoms, and also other practices such as Mindfulness-based approaches.
My first session
Firstly, it’s good for us to establish a brief summary of what has brought you to counselling, which will initially be discussed in the consultation call. Once this is completed, I will send out my agreement information to you via email and request this is read and signed accordingly before counselling can take place appropriately.
What you can expect from my first session with you is safety. It’s important to establish how we work with one another, but even more importantly how we build our professional relationship to enhance your experience of therapy. It can be daunting anticipating what the process might look like, however, my role is to ensure we have an open dialogue to discuss any worries right from the start, to put your mind at ease. This will also be an opportunity for me to get to know you better, where I may write notes to guide us in future sessions.
The aim is to collaboratively explore your possible goals for therapy and establish an agreed understanding of how we can make this achievable, factoring in life factors and other situational circumstances for this to feel realistic and sustainable for you in the future.
Working with children will look different, and a range of play materials will be provided to offer a safe, therapeutic space for the child to be their authentic self, and therefore use these materials to express their thoughts and feelings. Creating realistic goals together is no different here, but will be tailored to age appropriate understanding and methods in achieving this.
Overall, my main priority is to create a comfortable, therapeutic space to allow a child to feel safe, and a space where their voice is heard. *Please note that child-based work will take place face to face and further information will be discussed during the consultation call with a parent/guardian (age dependant)*.
