About me and my therapy practice
I specialise in relationships, loss and bereavement, issues with which I have particular professional experience and competence.
Difficulties in our personal lives can cause such distress that it can be very hard to cope, let alone think clearly. There is no ‘normal’ way to react, and no timescale, despite what we and society may want or expect. All sorts of feelings – grief, confusion, shame, fear, anger, anxiety, depression, even relief – can overwhelm us.
Talking can really help. But often those closest to us are dealing with their own problems, or we may be afraid of burdening, embarrassing or even boring them.
Warmth, empathy, acceptance and no judgement are the principal qualities I embody in my work. I will listen and support you as we discuss together what is causing you distress and explore how you can find change, peace or meaning in your life.
I practise integratively, which means I'm trained and proficient in several different modalities (ways of working) which can be tailored to suit your needs and wishes.
In addition to my private practice, I've been a senior counsellor at an adult bereavement service, and counselled young people aged 12 to 18 for mental health charity Mind. I worked for three years with HoardingUK, a specialist charity supporting people with hoarding disorder, as a counsellor and undertaking initial assessments with clients in their homes.
I work with people from young adults to individuals in their eighties and nineties, and of different nationalities, races, backgrounds, faiths, genders and sexualities. I acknowledge difference and respect our unique life experiences and viewpoints.
The welfare of my clients is my priority, and as an Accredited member of the NCPS and a registered member of the BACP, I am bound by their Codes of Ethics. For your protection and reassurance, I’m fully insured and have an Enhanced DBS check.
Practice description
Face to face 60-minute sessions in an airy and welcoming room in Dalston, Hackney E8, or by Zoom or telephone.
I offer sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am, with the last appointment at 5pm.
I usually suggest we begin with regular weekly sessions which may at some point - if you would like - become fortnightly or ad-hoc, according to your needs, schedule and budget and my week-to-week availability. Together we can work out the best way to offer you just the right level of support.
You can have just a few sessions or have open-ended or longer-term therapy. And I can often offer an alternative if you cannot make your usual time or day (if you have one) but don't want to miss a session.
Very close to tube stations and numerous bus routes. Street parking (permit on request) and secure indoor bike storage.
WC, no waiting room. Ten steps from the street to the main door.
Each session costs £70.
My first session
I offer a free, no-obligation 20-minute conversation by telephone or on Zoom, in which we can informally discuss your circumstances, your needs and aims for therapy and how we might work together. It's an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about counselling in general or my service in particular.
The quality of the relationship between client and counsellor is by far the most important factor influencing how effective therapy is, so this first step can be a big help to you in finding a counsellor with whom you feel safe and comfortable, and in whom you have confidence.
If you then decide you would like to begin therapy with me, I'll send you a copy of my contract and confidentiality agreement, and ask for some factual information about you. I'll also send you a 'welcome pack' ahead of our first session, including basic Covid-safety precautions if we're meeting face to face.
We'll agree when to have sessions to suit you and your life.
During our first session we'll do an assessment together, which is a conversation that includes an overview of your current circumstances, your hopes or goals for therapy and the issue or issues currently most affecting you. If you haven't had therapy before, we can talk about how we'll proceed and what to expect from then on.
Please get in touch if you'd like to have an informal discussion about us working together, or to book a first session.
