About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I am Rev Liza Gill, a BACP Registered Counsellor with a background in theology, healthcare leadership, pastoral care and community development. I am passionate about supporting individuals to navigate life's challenges, strengthen emotional wellbeing and develop resilience, self-awareness and personal growth.
I appreciate that seeking counselling can feel unfamiliar for some people. I offer a safe, confidential, compassionate and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences at their own pace. I believe people have the capacity for growth and change and work collaboratively to help clients gain insight, develop coping strategies and make meaningful changes.
Alongside my counselling practice, I have extensive NHS experience leading services, supporting volunteers, mentoring individuals and working with people from diverse cultural, social and faith backgrounds. This has provided me with an understanding of the impact of stress, burnout, caring responsibilities, life transitions, and questions of identity, meaning and purpose.
My practice is integrative, drawing primarily on Person-Centred principles and evidence-informed approaches to meet each client's needs and goals. I believe a strong therapeutic relationship is central to counselling and aim to provide a trusting environment where clients feel heard, valued and supported.
I support clients experiencing anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement, burnout, relationship difficulties, workplace challenges, life transitions, financial stress, women's wellbeing concerns, spiritual struggles, and pastoral or ministry-related issues. The practice is committed to supporting the next generation of counsellors and intends to offer placements for counselling students.
We can provide a faith-sensitive approach that respectfully incorporates Christian beliefs and values where appropriate, whilst always upholding autonomy, diversity and individual choice.
Practice description
I offer a warm, compassionate, and confidential counselling service for all experiencing a range of emotional, relational, and life challenges. I provide a safe and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences at their own pace, enabling greater self-awareness, healing, and personal growth.
My approach is integrative and person-centred, recognising that every individual is unique and that therapy should be tailored to meet each person's specific needs and goals. I draw upon person-centred principles, trauma-informed practice, strengths-based approaches, and evidence-informed interventions to support clients in understanding themselves more fully, developing healthier coping strategies, and moving towards meaningful and lasting change.
I have experience supporting individuals with anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement, burnout, workplace pressures, relationship difficulties, life transitions, financial stress, issues of identity and purpose, and women's wellbeing, including midlife changes and menopause. I also have a particular interest in supporting those in caring, helping, leadership, ministry, and healthcare roles who may be experiencing compassion fatigue, overwhelm, or challenges in balancing personal and professional responsibilities.
For clients who wish to explore spirituality or faith within therapy, I offer a faith-sensitive approach that respects individual beliefs, values, and autonomy. My aim is to provide an accepting therapeutic relationship where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered to work towards improved wellbeing, resilience, and a renewed sense of hope.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, discuss what has brought you to counselling, and consider how we might work together. I understand that beginning therapy can feel daunting, so I aim to provide a welcoming, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
During our initial session, I will invite you to talk about your current concerns, relevant personal history, previous experiences of counselling (if any), and what you hope to gain from therapy. We will also discuss practical matters such as confidentiality, data protection, session frequency, fees, boundaries, and how we can work together safely and effectively.
An initial assessment will be completed to help us understand your needs, ensure that counselling is appropriate for you at this time, and identify any risks or additional support that may be beneficial. There is no obligation to commit to ongoing sessions following our first meeting. This session provides an opportunity for both of us to consider whether we feel we can establish a positive therapeutic relationship and work together towards your goals.
I offer a complimentary 20-minute telephone or online consultation prior to booking a first appointment for clients who would like the opportunity to ask questions and discuss whether counselling with me may be the right fit for their needs.
