About me and my therapy practice

A Bit About Me:

I am 54 years of age and live in Ayrshire. I worked in mental health and social work services for many years but now focus solely on person centred & mindfulness focused therapy.

After having overcome difficult times in terms of depression and anxiety I decided I needed to rethink what was important to me. That led me to learn more about mindfulness and meditation and to train as a person centred therapist.

I decided to train as a counsellor to offer a direct way of supporting people to understand and help themselves more affectively.  I believe therapy is under utilised as a method of improving mental health and well-being. I think we are the best people to help ourselves but sometimes need a little guidance in working that out.

What Others Have Said about My Work:

“If it hadn’t been for our sessions I wouldn’t have the motivation, courage or confidence to look elsewhere” (for work) (K, England, 2022)

“The only therapy that’s worked for me” (A, Scotland, 2022)

“Very helpful and made me realise I would like to address the way I view relationships. Incredibly lucky to have you as therapist.” (J, England, 2022)

“I really can’t thank you enough for all your help these past 6 months or so… Thank you so much!” (C Dec 22)

“Really valuable and the things Ian says get stored in my mind” (F April 23)

“I am grateful for having such an open, listening and loving person beside me.” K, Poland, December 23)

“What I love about Ian’s approach is that I don’t feel judged by him and I feel safe to share everything that is on my mind.” (L, Berlin, Dec 23)

“I have been seeing Ian for just over a year now and he has drastically help me manage my mental health“ (N, Australia, May 24)

Practice description

I work via text, phone or zoom. I also work face to face both in my home and will work with you in your home if you feel more comfortable with this. We can talk about which way works best for you.

am a person centred therapist who is comfortable working with a wide variety of issues.  As a male therapist I know it can be difficult for men often to be open about their thoughts and feelings. This can be difficult for anyone.

I have experience in mental health services and am confident in terms of these conditions and their impact - both in terms of the symptoms and the stigma attached to them but my preference is often to leave the diagnosis at the door and work with you and how you are.

Inevitably my practice will be influenced by Buddhist concepts such as mindfulness and similar ideas. I am quite open in my approach to talk about any issues that may be important to you.  This can be about how you feel or if you just wish to find a sense of spiritual purpose and meaning in life and talk to someone to talk to who has a similar Interest and awareness.

However, I think it essential that my practice be direct and clear - relatable, honest & no scented candles or flowery language!

4 SESSION THERAPY:

I offer a  brief 4 session therapy block during which we can look at the issues you want to bring and consider exercises and tools that might help.

During these sessions, I will seek to help you understand a little about how you can change the way you perceive things, understand yourself a little better and provide some guidance that you can practically use. These will be mindfulness based tools that are simple but effective for all.

At the end of the 4 sessions we can decide if you wish to continue with more work or if you’ve enough for now to deal with your issues a little better.

Knowing there is a time limit on the sessions can be helpful in feeling confident and being able to commit yourself.

My first session

I offer an initial session to talk with you and see if we feel we can work together.  This will be free.

Contact me and we can arrange to do this either by phone, zoom or face to face depending on your preference.
