About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified counsellor working with clients in Sevenoaks and online. I work psychodynamically and I specialise in Post-Cult Counselling for those who have suffered trauma in coercive, cultic and/or spiritually abusive settings.

My training and primary modality is psychodynamic therapy but I work in a relational and integrative way. I aim to offer a safe, confidential, empathic and non-judgemental space to explore your feelings and behaviours. During our sessions together, we might think about your past experiences and relationships and how these might be affecting your life now. We might also explore patterns of behaviour that might be causing you difficulty and ways in which change may be possible.

It can sometimes be really hard to deal with emotional or personal issues on our own and talking them through with the support of a counsellor can be very helpful. You may have suffered with anxiety or depression all of your life and feel that now is the right time to address where those feelings may have stemmed from and how they may be lessened. You may be feeling overwhelmed because you’ve suffered a bereavement, a relationship break-up or have concerns with your health; counselling can provide a safe space to work through all of these things. Aims of counselling could be to work towards healthier life choices and relationships, as well as gaining higher self-esteem, confidence and self-worth.

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and I work within their ethical framework.

Practice description

My specialist area is working with those who have suffered trauma in coercive, cultic and/or spiritually abusive settings (within, for example, highly controlled religions or 1:1 relationships). I am trained and certified in Post-Cult Counselling by cult-expert, Dr Gillie Jenkinson. I work with clients using trauma-informed counselling and psychoeducation in the form of a Post-Cult Counselling Workbook – A Guide for Your Recovery and Growth. Sessions can be weekly at the usual length of 50-minutes per session or fortnightly for a slightly longer session duration of 90-minutes.

I use psychoeducation in my work with clients to help demystify the way our nervous system responds to situations and to understand the mind/body connection. I provide and/or recommend a number of workbooks, diagrams, handouts, books, podcasts, videos and documentaries on topics I feel are particularly relevant.

My qualifications and training at a glance:

• I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

• I have a BACP accredited Certificate and Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling

• I have undertaken additional training in Post-Cult Counselling and have a Certificate in this

• I have an Honours Degree and a Masters Degree in Psychology

My first session

I offer a 20-minute complimentary phone conversation during which time we can talk about why you would like to access therapy. It’s an opportunity for us to ask each other a few questions and to see if working together might feel like a good option. You are under no obligation to commit to therapy with me at this time but you may decide you would like to arrange a full session where we will agree a suitable day and time. Many clients choose weekly counselling but I like to offer a degree of flexibility for those with changing work schedules, complex health conditions or financial difficulties.
