About me and my therapy practice

I'm Caitlin Young, a BACP-accredited counsellor, a BICA member working towards accreditation and psychotherapist specialising in fertility struggles and perinatal mental health. With a warm, empathetic approach grounded in CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy, and Person-Centred principles, I support women like you through the emotional challenges of infertility, IVF, miscarriage, pregnancy anxiety, postpartum difficulties, and the profound identity shifts of becoming a mother.

Having navigated my own journey into motherhood amid international relocation, I truly understand the grief, isolation, hope, and overwhelm that can arise. Therapy with me offers a safe, non-judgemental space to process these experiences, reduce shame, build self-compassion, and develop practical tools for lasting emotional resilience and joy.

You don't have to face this alone—I'm here to walk alongside you towards hope, healing, and a more empowered path forward.

Practice description

My practice is called Greener Avenues Therapy which encompasses my belief that after engaging to a therapeutic journey down 'Greener Avenues' you will come out the other side more content and ready to thrive within your life.

My practice has rooms in the Infinity Skin Clinic, in Edinburgh which is easily accesible by public transport as well as has street parking available nearby. There is a inviting and warm waiting area for therapy clients in the Infinity Skin Clinic while they wait for their therapy appointments.  In addition, I also offer online sessions utilising the safe and secure platform of Write-Upp for sessions, making therapy safe & accesible for the individuals not based in Edinburgh.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes long, and I work with adults on an open-ended or time-limited basis, depending on your needs. I aim to offer appointments within a week of initial contact where possible, with some evening availability. I try to be as flexible as I can in terms of appointment scheduling as I appreciate that everyone has demanding daily schedules.

As a mother myself, I know that any effort made to put your needs first can be challenging. I try to take all of these aspects into consideration when it comes to an agreement of scheduling appointments.

As a BACP accredited member, I adhere fully to their Ethical Framework, ensuring confidentiality, respect, and professional standards in everything I do. I am also a BICA member ( working towards accreditation) as well as a BABCP member, incorporating the foundations of CBT into my practice which ensures I am able to provide effective, evidence-based thorough treatment plans for clients.

If you'd like to discuss whether I might be the right therapist for you, please get in touch for an initial chat.

My first session

I offer an initial free 30- minute 'no commitments' phone call with prospective clients  to ascertain whether my approach suits your needs.

For the assessment session, this session is an hour long appointment whereby you will complete several assessments questionnaires as well as provides details your current mental health state.  We also spend time identifying therapeutic goals you have in mind for your therapy sessions, as well as discuss & agree the therapeutic contract I have as part of my practice.

The assessment session is structured differently from other therapeutic sessions whereby it is focused on information gathering and establishing rapport & alliance between therapist and client.  The session however does follow the structure of being confidential and no information being disclosed, unless I believe you are or someone you are discussing is in danger of being harmed.

For specialised fertility counselling enquiries, assessment & treatment planning will take each patient's cirumstances under consideration and sessions will be planned around the specific needs of the clients.

For the specialised perinatal mental health support, I do take into consideration the gestational timing of an enquiry.  As per clinical recommendation, therapy should pause when the mother is 36 weeks pregnant and not resume until at least 4 to 6 weeks postnatal period. I follow these guidelines when it comes to assessing a client enquirying the specialised perinatal mental health support.
