About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Harriet. I’m an integrative and relational-developmental therapist specialising in supporting adults with difficult or dysfunctional family relationships, early attachment wounds and childhood trauma.

Perhaps you grew up with a parent who was critical, emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, immature, controlling, or struggling with addiction or their own mental health.

I imagine you have spent years trying to make sense of what's happened, questioning your own experience or wondering whether you were the problem. Perhaps you hoped that if you tried harder, explained yourself better, achieved more, needed less, set boundaries or were finally “good enough”, things would change and you would finally get the relationship with your parents that you needed. Maybe you are here because no matter what you try, the same old patterns keep repeating themselves and you're not sure what to do instead.

I work with people who:

  • Grew up with an alcoholic, narcissistic, emotionally immature, critical, absent or inconsistent parent
  • Are the family scapegoat or favourite child
  • Struggle to identify their needs, communicate them or set boundaries
  • Feel "too much" or "not enough" in relationships
  • Experience insecurity, anxiety or fear of rejection in romantic relationships
  • Find it difficult to trust others, feel safe in relationships or be emotionally vulnerable
  • Want to understand and heal attachment wounds
  • Are high achieving yet have a strong inner critic, struggle with perfectionism, anxiety, people pleasing, overworking or burnout
  • Want to break generational patterns for their own children
  • Feel a sense of dread or obligation around seeing family and know that something needs to change
  • Want to heal their inner child and grieve for the parent they needed but didn’t have
  • Are navigating family estrangement, considering low contact or no contact, or wanting to set new boundaries with relatives

I have a particular interest and lived experience of narcissistic family dynamics and estrangement.

Practice description

I am a compassionate and straight talking therapist who will support you to better understand how early relationships and experiences from childhood have impacted who you are today.

I do this by working in a developmental and relational way. This means that we don't simply talk about your relationships with other people, but our relationship becomes part of the work itself.

If early experiences with caregivers left you feeling unseen, unheard, criticised, unsafe or unsure of where you stood, it is likely these anxieties or insecurities will also show up with me. Perhaps you learned to keep the peace, hide your needs, be 'good', avoid conflict, work hard for approval or put other people first, and whilst these strategies helped you to survive your childhood, they are now outdated and get in the way of the connection you really need.

Within our relationship, you have the opportunity to experience some of what may have been missing earlier in your life. Like being listened to, taken seriously, responded to with consistency and able to have your own thoughts, feelings and needs without having to earn my care or acceptance.

These experiences help to repair old relational wounds by giving you new experiences of healthy relationships. Together, we can notice what happens when you trust, disagree, set a boundary, become vulnerable or worry about how I might respond. Rather than simply talking about these patterns, you have the opportunity to experience and practise something different within our relationship.

Over time, these new experiences can become more familiar and give you greater choice in how you relate to others. You can begin to recognise what feels safe and healthy, communicate your needs, set boundaries and stay connected to yourself while being close to someone else.

This helps you develop a more secure sense of yourself and relationships, so that the changes you make in therapy can extend to others in your life.

My first session

I see our first session as an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other, without any pressure or expectation beyond that. We can explore what you're experiencing now, what you would like to change and some of the experiences and relationships that may have shaped how you feel and relate to others today.

Reaching out for therapy can feel like a big step, particularly if you're used to managing things on your own. You may even feel guilty about asking for help, or worry that talking about your family means you're being disloyal or selfish. I understand that two things can be true at the same time - you can love your family and still recognise that some of your experiences have affected you and that you need something for yourself.

If you have experienced relationships where you haven't felt safe, heard or understood, trusting someone new can take time. I'm not expecting you to feel completely comfortable or to trust me straight away. There is no pressure to share more than feels right, and we can take the time to build a relationship where you gradually feel able to be yourself.

You don't have to have everything figured out before you arrive and you probably don't even know what you need. We can make sense of it all together and take things at your own pace.

I offer a free no-obligation 20 minute zoom call where we can have an informal chat and get a sense of whether i am the right therapist for you. You can also follow me on Instagram: @therapy.with.harriet

About me and my therapy practice

I am an integrative and relational counsellor passionate about supporting you to heal from dysfunctional family relationships, emotional neglect and unresolved childhood trauma

Many of the challenges we face as adults such as anxietyperfectionismrelationship problems, or feeling “stuck” in unhelpful patterns of behaviour are often rooted in your early experiences with your parents.

I specialise in supporting individuals who:

  • Have difficult relationships with family
  • Grew up with critical, absent, or inconsistent parents
  • Want to resolve anxious or avoidant attachment patterns
  • Were the family scapegoat, or favourite child
  • Have a loud inner critic and struggle with anxiety, insecurity, and perfectionism
  • Are children of alcoholic, depressed, or narcissistic parents.
  • Have a late ADHD/ autism diagnosis and struggle with feelings of being good enough or fitting in.

You might:

  • Feel criticised, dismissed or compared to siblings
  • Struggle with setting boundaries around toxic or controlling family members
  • Feel like you are “too much” or worry that your feelings are burdensome to others
  • Feel a pressure to “perform” or act a certain way to be accepted and good enough.
  • Be drawn into patterns of conflict or old roles, such as the scapegoat or peacemaker
  • Experience feelings of guilt, shame, or anxiety that you thought you had left behind
  • Want to understand the dynamics more clearly and have a safe space to share how it’s impacting you.

These situations can leave you frustrated, upset, or overwhelmed and you might be feeling guilty about wanting to set new boundaries with family, or desperately trying to get them to change. I’ve been there, an can help you to make sense of things and process your feelings in a safe space to reduce their power over you.

If it sounds like you would like to work with me, or would like to find out a bit more; I welcome you to email me to arrange a FREE introductory 20 minute telephone call.
