Availability
I currently have online spaces available most days after 5pm. I am also able to do early online sessions before 8am as I know it's hard for those that do shift work to find the time.
With notice I may be able to accommodate some times during the day, however this will likely not form part of our regular agreement.
About me and my therapy practice
I would imagine by now you have scrolled through what seems to be a never-ending list of faces and counselling attributes that you have likely found pretty overwhelming - I know this was my experience once upon a time. Thanks for taking the stop by and reading this, it's appreciated as I know taking those first steps in seeking help aren't always easy.
I'll start by introducing myself, I'm Neil and I've been a qualified counsellor for the last 5 years. Prior and on my way to qualifying I've spent many years working in homelessness, children's social care teams, working in a substance misuse charity and most recently in higher education with students struggling with their mental health.
Working in such distinctly different environments has allowed me to see just how much of a toll life and everything that comes with it can take can take on a person, and at the same time how much this can be transformed through kindness, acceptance, compassion and a fair amount of hard work.
Practice description
I tend to work in a relational way with the people I see, building trust and a feeling of safety that will hopefully allow them to share whatever it is they feel ready to. There's no agenda on my part and my only ask is that you make this commitment to yourself even when the going gets tough.
A lot of my work is underpinned by understanding someone's life experiences through models such as attachment theory, compassion focussed theory, but ultimately by listening carefully and sensitively to whatever you bring to the session. I will always treat your experiences with the care and attention they deserve while ensuring when the time is right, together, we challenge some of the unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that are holding you back - I won't tell you this will be easy, however what I can tell you is that it can feel liberating and empowering to come out of the other side knowing you have made these changes for the better.
The space we create together is somewhere you can share your difficulties in a way that allows for new insights, psychological exploration, unpacking of past traumas, revelations and also allows for some fun and laughter too - maybe not something you immediately think about when seeking a counsellor but is something that is important too. There has to be light with the shade.
My first session
Initially we will have a 25minute call or online meeting where I'll get to know what it is you're looking for and to give you an idea of what sessions with me will look like - I don't charge a fee for this as it's just an opportunity for you to see if you might like to work with me.
There's absolutely no obligation to make a decision straight away, and I always encourage people to try and meet 3 maybe 4 counsellors to see who they feel is the best fit.
