Therapist - York

York YO1
07852924557
Sessions from £80.00

Features

  • Flexible hours available

Availability

I currently have availability for EMDR therapy, both within my York city centre practice and from my office in Wheldrake. Sessions typically last 90 minutes, hence the difference in price from more traditional talking therapy.

About me and my therapy practice

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that helps people heal from traumatic memories that continue to cause distress (e.g. flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts and behaviours that negatively impact daily life). It uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help your brain reprocess distressing memories and reduce emotional intensity.

EMDR is especially effective for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), single traumatic experiences such as car accidents, a sexual assault, witnessing a distressing incident or other distressing occurrence. It is also effective for negative experiences that may have happened over a longer period of time such as an abusive adult relationship, childhood trauma, combat trauma or bullying (either as a child or adult).

Whether you're dealing with a single-incident trauma or complex trauma, EMDR can help alleviate the distress caused by painful experiences so they no longer dominate your thoughts, emotions and daily life.

I am a fully trained EDMR practitioner, trained by the EMDR Academy.

Therapy can feel a little daunting, which is why we would chat on the phone initially about EMDR, to learn more about it, and to ask me any questions.  We may have several sessions before the 'actual' bilateral stimulation; this is to ensure you are comfortable with the therapy, practice grounding techniques and to ensure I have enough information and history in order for us to start. We will not rush - you need to feel safe and in control if EMDR is to work.

In addition to EMDR I offer more traditional talking therapy at £55 for a one hour session.

Practice description

For me, the key to successful therapy is the relationship between the therapist (me) and the client (you). If you feel safe and able to share your experiences and feelings with me, there's a good chance that you will notice improvements in your mental wellbeing very quickly.

EMDR sessions are generally longer than traditional talking therapy. Once we are ready to commence the actual bilateral stimulation, sessions will typically involve some checking in initially to determine if there have been improvements, a period of bilateral stimulation (usually eye movement) followed by grounding exercises to ensure you feel able to leave and carry on with your day.

EMDR is a structured therapy, and unlike some other therapies, we will 'measure' improvements. We will check in each week to ensure you are feeling the benefit of our work together.

My first session

I will offer you a free telephone consultation to check that we are right for each other. You will then be invited for your first therapy session where we will explore your goals and we will look at the counsellor/client contract so that we both know what to expect from therapy. I will explain more about EDMR so that you feel fully ready and prepared for the work we will be doing together.

I work Monday to Thursday during the daytime and evenings. I have an office in York city centre as well as in Wheldrake (YO19).

About me and my therapy practice

There are many reasons why people seek counselling. It may be a major life crisis or a specific issue, or it may be that you are struggling with day-to-day life and would value someone to talk to and gain clarity. I understand that asking for help can be daunting; I also know that seeking counselling may be the first (big!) step to a happier future. I will work at your pace and the work we do will be collaborative. I believe that the relationship between us (me, the counsellor and you, the client) is crucial to successful therapy and I will strive to build a safe and trusting environment in which you feel able to open up.

My work is with clients of different ages and genders who bring a wide range of issues to talk about. I have experience of working with adults and teens who are neurodivergent and we can usually work together to accommodate any specific needs that would make the counselling process more comfortable.

Practice description

I will be curious about your early relationships and experiences – but understand that some people may want to focus more on the ‘here and now’ issues whilst others may wish to focus on difficult past experiences. I am open to working in creative ways or by simply talking. Both are fine and can be powerful and healing experiences.

I can integrate EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) into our work if appropriate, or I can provide purely EMDR if this what you require, and I feel you are a suitable client.

I work in central York with nearby parking as well as in Wheldrake. My counselling style is warm and friendly, yet professional. I will gently challenge you if needed and will regularly check to see if you are feeling the benefit of our work together.

My rates are as follows:

Sessions Monday - Thursday:  from £55

EMDR sessions: Sessions are typically 90 minutes long and cost £80.

I am an EMDR practitioner; this is an effective psychotherapy technique which can help with troublesome memories that may be continuing to cause day-to-day distress.

I work in Wheldrake which is probably best accessed by car. Online counselling is also an option, however, my preference is face-to-face as I enjoy building up a relationship which I find is more effective in person.
