About me and my therapy practice
I’m a person-centred psychotherapist/counsellor, MBACP and UKCP-registered. I’m also a coach, an academic and a writer.
I seek to offer a warm, empathic, non-judgemental, confidential space, where you can share as much or as little as you choose, and we can gently explore together, relationally and intellectually, with curiosity and respect, working at your own pace, moving towards your self-discovery and healing.
For me, therapy is a radical act. It’s part of social justice. It offers a space where we can challenge society’s expectations and judgements. We can seek to free ourselves and see where that takes us.
You are welcome to bring whatever material you wish to bring into our sessions together.
While one issue might bring you to therapy, we’re all more complex than that, and life will also unfold while you’re in therapy.
Feel free to be in touch whatever you’re wanting to say.
I offer person-centred psychotherapy/counselling on Zoom or on the telephone.
Practice description
Some particular areas of expertise I offer are as follows:
* Psychotherapy/counselling focused on trauma, interpersonal violence and abuse, domestic violence, sexual violence, and coping/survival strategies, such as the use of drugs and alcohol. As a sociologist who taught interpersonal abuse for many years, I don’t collude with society’s victim-blaming and I’ll bring this into the therapy room. You’re welcome to come and see how this feels.
* Psychotherapy/counselling for academic, professional services and third space staff in higher education. Higher education is so pressurised - all the KPIs and metrics, the huge workload, the uncertainty and risk – especially now, with the crisis in the sector. There will be impacts on you, your work-life balance, your feelings about your work and the future - alongside all of the positives of work that so often becomes part of our identity. If you’d like a space for exploration that that is separate from your employment - you are welcome to be in touch. I get the context in which you’re working: I am a seasoned academic, having worked as a lecturer, senior lecturer, line manager and senior manager for over 25 years.
* Psychotherapy/counselling for trainee therapists. Are you a counselling/psychotherapy student looking for weekly therapy with a UKCP-registered psychotherapist (which is equivalent to being an accredited member of BACP) as part of your course requirements? From retraining as a therapist myself - juggling the academic work and clinical obligations alongside doing a full-time job - and having taught on and led counselling training courses, I’m familiar with the intense demands this training makes. It’s unlike anything else in the world. I am the author, with Pete Sanders, of the 4th edition of the textbook: Step in to Study Counselling and Psychotherapy, PCCS Books, 2022. Step in to study counselling and psychotherapy (4th edition) 9781915220141 (pccs-books.co.uk)
My first session
I offer a free 15 minute telephone call so we can see if we would like to work together. Please email me on hello@coachingwithdeb.co.uk and we can arrange a time that suits us.
If we decide to proceed, we can agree a time to meet on Zoom or on the telephone.
Sessions last for 50 minutes and are pre-paid at the time of booking.
I don’t ask for all your personal material as part of an ‘assessment’ at our first session. I prefer you to share with me as and when you wish to do so. There may be some things you never tell me and that’s fine.
