About me and my therapy practice
Welcome, I'm Abigail.
I am a qualified and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist. I offer a safe space for you to speak about anything that's troubling you, in a confidential and supportive setting.
I work with people experiencing a wide range of issues. These include loss/separation, low mood, anxiety, distress, relationship/work difficulties, self-esteem, early life issues, and difficult thoughts and feelings. Sometimes there is a sense of needing to make changes but not knowing where to start.
My aim is to help you explore what's going on for you, at your own pace. Rather than seeing a client as ‘a problem’ to solve, I see every person as a unique individual with their own particular story and experiences.
In a stressful world I believe counselling offers something quite rare and special – the time and space to attend to what matters in your life and inner world.
Over time life presents us with new situations and challenges which although painful to encounter, are also opportunities to gain in insight, resources and perspective.
Counselling can lead to new ways of being and relating. It can help with navigating tricky life experiences, developing creativity, releasing grief, trauma and frozen patterns, and finding a way forward towards a more meaningful and authentic life.
My training
I trained at CCPE (London) on their four-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP/ UKCP accredited). I later undertook a Research Masters into the long-term impacts of childhood bereavement (award of Distinction).
My training is Integrative, meaning that I draw upon several well-established modalities and adapt these to the needs of the client. These include the humanistic approach (which emphasises human potential), psychodynamic (which seeks to understand and transform unconscious patterns from early life) and transpersonal (which includes a holistic and spiritual perspective on experience).
Professional bodies
I am registered with both BACP and UKCP.
Practice description
Once we have agreed to work together (see My First Session, below) we will usually meet at the same time and day each week. It is this rhythm of the work that, alongside the relationship between us, provides the container for exploration and change.
I tend to work by listening deeply to what is being said and reflecting on the themes brought to the session by you. Sometimes we may work more actively, such as by using practical or cognitive tools to explore what is going on. If it seems helpful, I can offer additional techniques of exploration such as artwork, visualisation and mindfulness-based approaches.
My first session
The purpose of our first session will be to explore what brings you to counselling and how I might be able to help you. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about counselling. If we are both happy to work together, we will agree a regular time (usually weekly) for your ongoing sessions.
My fee for the initial session (50-60 mins) is £65, payable in advance of the session. Subsequent 50 minute sessions are £65.
Prior to your first session I offer a free no-obligation 15-20 minute phone call, if you would like to find out more before booking a consultation.
