About me and my therapy practice
Would you describe life as living or existing?
It is a big step to start putting your needs alongside others, let alone putting them ahead of others. Yet, is it sustainable to give and get nothing in return? Ultimately this can lead to depression, anxiety and coping strategies including addiction.
Is it selfish to think about your own needs?
Not entirely, in fact sharing your needs can strengthen relationships. As a basic example, if you had to buy a gift for a friend, wouldn't it be easier if you knew what they liked/wanted? Would you prefer knowing that the friend genuinely liked the gift? How would others know what you would appreciate if you do not make your needs and preferences known? You would be enabling others to know you better and this is beneficial to all relationships.
Does the past affect the present?
In so many ways: it constructs our expectations of the world around us, which can sometimes be quite high depending on childhood experiences. However counselling is not about blaming the past or those in it, but about acknowledging what was not ideal and how this affected you. By knowing what went wrong you can understand what needs to change and together we can implement those changes.
Is counselling really hard and unpleasant?
There are moments when it can feel very heavy, and as a counsellor I feel that too, you are not alone with it. There are moments when something clicks and the relief feels powerful. The ultimate goal is to find balance: life is not all good, but the difficult parts are easier to navigate knowing more about yourself and the relationships you have built.
Practice description
I am naturally warm and nurturing and want you to feel welcome in my practice; I will always greet you with a "how are you" rather than waiting for you to start the session.
I am active within the sessions, exploring what you are bringing and offering back thoughts, connections or observations to help us both understand better what it is we are working with. I like to engage in imagery and creativity where relevant, as well as using metaphor such as feeling 'in a pit'. With this varied way of working, some sessions can feel intellectual or heavy, and the next light-hearted and playful. All sessions have value in exploring different parts of you and how you relate to the world.
I offer face to face sessions in Worthing, or online via Zoom- I have found both to be effective. I like to approach this work as open ended, because I believe that having a time restraint puts unnecessary pressure on the work. Weekly sessions is ideal, particularly early on, but I offer fortnightly sessions as well. For me, this work is about providing a safe space that suits your needs, and these change throughout the work. The first step is reaching out, I can be alongside you after that.
My first session
Initial assessments last no more than 30 minutes, are not charged and will be carried out either over the telephone or via Zoom- please let me know of your preference.
This is a general chat to find out what you are looking for from your counselling and for us to 'get a feel' for each other. I generally will start with "why do you want to start counselling?" and we go from there. I will also go over my 'counselling agreement' with my terms and conditions regarding fees, attendance, confidentiality and gdpr- you will be given a copy of this to sign and for your records.
You are not committed to start counselling with me after the initial session, equally if you would like to go ahead and book your first full session we can do this depending on scheduling. I offer daytime sessions only (9-5) from Monday to Friday.
