About me and my therapy practice
I’m Marian Kennedy, a fully qualified counsellor and registered member of BACP (MBACP). I work with individuals and couples in my private therapy room in Chinnor, Oxfordshire, and online with people anywhere in the UK.
My approach is person-centred and trauma-informed. I see you as the expert on your own life, so I won’t tell you what to do or hand you a formula. I listen closely to what you say and to what is hard to put into words, and help you make sense of what you find. You set the pace, and you never have to share more than you feel ready to.
For me, counselling rests on the relationship between us. I believe that feeling genuinely heard, understood and accepted, including the messy and uncomfortable parts, is where meaningful change begins.
I have over 1,000 client hours in private practice, and I have worked with people recovering from domestic abuse. I bring care, honesty and steadiness to difficult subjects, and I won’t shy away from them.
I also bring my own lived experience of difficult times, including a traumatic childhood and abuse. It shapes the way I listen. I don’t assume I know what your experience is like, but I won’t flinch from it either.
I work within the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, receive regular clinical supervision, and hold professional indemnity insurance covering both in-person and online work across the UK.
Practice description
I offer individual and couples counselling for adults aged 18 and over, in person in Chinnor, Oxfordshire, and online by video across the UK.
Individual counselling gives you time that belongs entirely to you. People come to me with anxiety and overwhelm, stress and burnout, trauma and difficult experiences from the past, low self-worth, relationship and family difficulties, grief, and big life changes. You don’t need a crisis, a diagnosis or the right words to begin.
Support after domestic abuse is an important part of my work. I support adults who have experienced emotional abuse, coercive control and financial control, as well as physical and sexual abuse. You don’t have to have left the relationship, and you don’t have to be sure that what happened counts as abuse. If it isn’t safe for me to reply by phone, text or email, tell me how I can contact you safely.
Couples counselling offers both of you a calm, fair space to talk and be heard. I don’t take sides or decide who is right. I help you slow difficult conversations down and notice the patterns you fall into together. If there is current domestic abuse or coercive control in a relationship, joint sessions can put someone at risk, so I would talk with you about safer alternatives first.
Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly, or at a frequency we agree. There is no fixed number of sessions. Some people come for a few weeks, others for longer, and we review how it is going as we go.
Fees start from £70 per individual session, with concessionary rates available. I offer a free 30-minute initial conversation, and I ask for 48 hours’ notice to cancel. Full details are on my website.
Counselling is confidential, with the usual professional exceptions, which I explain at the start. It is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, please call 999.
My first session
Starting counselling can feel daunting, so here is what to expect.
The first step is to get in touch by phone, email or through my website. I offer a free 30-minute initial conversation, to talk about what you are looking for and to see whether counselling with me feels right. There is no pressure and no obligation to continue.
In your first session, we talk about what has brought you here and what you hope for. You can ask me anything about how I work, and we agree how we will use our time together. I will explain confidentiality and its limits, and go through the practical details such as timing, fees and cancellations.
You don’t need to prepare anything or know what to say. You can tell your story in whatever order it comes out, or simply say that you don’t know where to start. I won’t push you to share more than you want to, and we move at your pace.
At the end of the session, you can decide whether you would like to continue. Many people find it helpful to take a little time to think about how it felt before booking again.
If you are coming as a couple, one of you can make the first contact, and I will explain how couples sessions work before we begin.
If you have experienced domestic abuse, or would feel safer being contacted in a particular way, please tell me, and I will make sure I use it.
