About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Melanie Rivera, a Counsellor, Integrative Therapist, and Wellbeing Coach, registered with the BACP.

I support adults (18+) who may be feeling emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in unhelpful cycles, or struggling to move forward — whether that’s due to self-doubt, low self-worth, relationship difficulties, stress, life changes, or the lingering impact of a difficult or traumatic childhood.

Many of my clients long to feel more grounded, confident, and at peace within themselves, ready to move forward with greater clarity and self-trust. I offer a calm, compassionate, and non-judgmental space to explore what’s going on beneath the surface, helping you gently make sense of your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Together, we’ll explore what matters most to you, moving toward greater clarity, emotional resilience, and self-trust.

“I believe meaningful change happens when therapy blends deep emotional exploration with practical support for realistic growth.”

My Integrative Approach

My approach draws on formal training, advanced study, and continuous professional development, integrating a range of evidence-based and experiential models:

  • Humanistic, Emotion-Focused & Compassion-Focused Therapy – to support deep emotional processing, self-acceptance, and inner growth.
  • Cognitive-Behavioural & Solution-Focused Approaches – including CBT, ACT, DBT, MBCT, and Motivational Interviewing – to build practical tools for managing thoughts, emotions, and behaviour.
  • Interpersonal and Relational Approaches – including IPT, EFIT, and Gottman relationship tools – to strengthen communication, connection, and relational awareness.
  • Trauma-Informed & Parts Work Approaches – including EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS) – to safely process and integrate past experiences within a structured framework.

Practice description

As an integrative therapist, I work intuitively and adaptively, drawing from both evidence-based models and humanistic values. Each session is tailored around your needs — not the other way around.

Clients often describe our work as “the best of both worlds” —deep emotional work balanced with practical tools for positive change. My approach is warm, grounded, and gently restorative, particularly supportive for those navigating emotional overload, trauma, or significant life transitions.

My Professional Background

My path into this work has been shaped by both lived experience and professional development. Over time, I’ve seen how therapy can help people reconnect with their inner strength, make sense of difficult experiences, and build emotional resilience, creating space for meaningful change and renewed self-trust.

I’ve been supporting people toward emotional wellbeing and meaningful change since 2012, across a range of roles and settings. My background includes work within Health & Social Care, community wellbeing services, and the criminal justice system, where I supported adults navigating complex emotional, relational, and situational challenges.

These experiences deepened my belief that therapy isn’t simply about “fixing what’s broken” — it’s about reconnecting with clarity, safety, and purpose, and developing the tools to sustain positive growth.

Today, I work in private practice, offering both online and in-person sessions. I provide Integrative Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support adults across the UK and locally within Purbeck, Dorset.

Sessions and Availability

I offer:

  • Short-term therapy (6–12 sessions or Single Session Therapy) for focused goals or life challenges.
  • Open-ended therapy for deeper, ongoing exploration and personal development.

Sessions last one hour and are available online UK-wide or when spaces are avilable in person in Purbeck, Dorset.

My first session

Choosing a therapist is a meaningful step in your healing journey, and it’s important that you feel confident in that choice. This is why I offer a free initial call—to answer any questions and help us explore what might support you best.

“My hope is that you’ll find therapy with me to be grounding, restorative, and genuinely helpful—whether you’re navigating a transition, managing trauma, or seeking greater clarity and connection in life.”

We’ll move at a pace that feels safe for you. You don’t need to have it all figured out—we begin wherever you are.

Warm Regards,

Melanie Rivera

Practice description

Private Practice

My path into this work has been shaped by both professional training and personal healing.

Since the late 1990s, I’ve followed a deep interest in emotional wellbeing—starting with holistic therapies and coaching, then later qualifying as a counsellor and Integrative psychotherapist.

Over the years, I’ve worked across diverse community settings, including Health & Social Care aligned wellbeing initiatives and contract work with the criminal justice system. These experiences deepened my belief that therapy is not just about “fixing what’s broken”—it’s about reconnecting with your sense of safety, clarity, and inner strength.

Today, I work in private practice with adults online throughout the UK, and offer limited in-person EMDR sessions in Dorset.

My first session

I offer a free initial phone call appointment (up to 30 mins), bookable through my website (yourwellbeingmatters.co.uk).

An initial call includes the opportunity to discuss your reasons and expectations from therapy, enabling us to discover if I am the right therapist to help you. You might have questions about the potential next steps forward relating to having some regular sessions, including what to expect from a first session.

I understand how the decision to seek therapy can feel overwhelming for some, especially if it is a new experience. Making that first step is often a difficult yet brave decision, and there may be worries about what to say when contacting a therapist.

My hope is that you'll find therapy with me to be grounding, restorative, and genuinely helpful—whether you're navigating a transition, managing trauma, or simply seeking greater clarity and connection in life.”

We’ll move at a pace that feels safe for you. You don’t need to have it all figured out—we begin wherever you are.
