About me and my therapy practice

Existential Therapy is the opportunity to look again at one’s lived-living experiences with fresh eyes and step beyond notions of disorders or dysfunction.

What if nothing is wrong, but how to live better and differently is the focus?

We explore values, anxiety, confusion, sense of meaning or meaningless, fears, uncertainty, choices through dialogue.

This path isn’t always comfortable. Often it's tough. How we navigate the unpredictability of change, difference and creating meaning is profound. It is the heartbeat of our therapeutic relationship.

“MeWe therapy”, offers you the opportunity to dialogue safely and confidentially, to gain greater understanding, hope, courage and perspective.

I will listen and work with you until I am superfluous.

“MeWe” is my privilege and our challenge. Possible concerns:

Anxiety

Limitations

Loss

Bereavement

Difference

Meaning

Meaninglessness

Confidence

Depression

Confusion

Practice description

                                               “MeWe”
                                                journeying

Legend has it in that 1975, boxer Muhammad Ali was invited to give a commencement speech to 2000 Harvard students. At the end of which a shout of “Give us a poem, Muhammad”, led to what may be one of the shortest English language poems. His response: “Me, We” or perhaps, “Me…Whee…”.

In this resonates fundamental understandings of existential, phenomenological psychotherapy: situated freedom and choice, interconnection, relational life.

Philosopher Martin Buber, describes this relation as “I-thou”. Hence, the "MeWe" of our existential therapeutic space seeks to embrace this understanding and “encounter you as a person, not as an object” (Buber. 1923), or in non-European-centric philosophy, “I am because we are, since we are, therefore I am. I am because of who we all are”, (Ethic of Ubuntu). It is this core "MeWe" relation I aim to nurture in our therapeutic space, to encourage your meaningful experiential and therapeutic journey.

The online experience offers flexibility and allows opportunities to meet that may be impossible were sessions only face to face. In my experience since the Covid pandemic, online work within the therapeutic community has proved popular for clients and often preferred. Research and my own online work has born out the efficacy of these sessions.

It is still important to ensure all sessions take place in a comfortable, confidential and private space for you. I will maintain such and ask that you too are clear the space you have allows you such privacy.

Please visit my website mewetherapy.org for detailed explanation of this therapy, fees and booking an introductory session.

About me and my therapy practice

“Life is nothing until it is lived. It is we who give it meaning, and value is nothing more than the meaning we give it”.

(J-P Sartre).

Simplicity perhaps, yet a life’s journey realising.

I am completing my doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling. I particularly explore how we meet and experience changes, choices, anxiety, challenges, difference and limitation. How do we accommodate to the world in which we find ourselves where all is shifting?

Rather than present as an expert imparting advice or diagnosis, working-with, alongside, challenging you to uncover and discover your unique responses to your concerns are my focus. I assume I do not know. It is your unique story and lived experience that guides. I meet you with a sense of your individuality rather than you as a type fitting to acronyms or pathology. I endeavour to “tune-in” phenomenologically to your here-and-now, not look to establish cause and historical influence. I listen, hear and respond to you as you navigate your problems of living.

Existential Therapy is the opportunity to “look again” at one’s experience, to step beyond notions of dysfunction, brokenness, pathologies, labels and expert cognitive or behavioural correction.

To explore your values, anxiety, confusion, fears, choices, and what is important to you now, through dialogue and description, rather than focus upon historical causes is the essence of our work.

This path isn’t always comfortable. How we recognise our values, choices and limitations and how we manage the unpredictability of change and difference is profound but it is the beating heart of our therapeutic space.

“MeWe therapy”, offers you this opportunity to talk safely and confidentially through these dilemmas together, to gain understanding, courage and perspective generated by your own exploration and vision, with me listening, prompting beside and with you until I am superfluous. I work existentially and phenomenologically; expert only in listening.

“MeWe” is my privilege, our challenge.
