About me and my therapy practice

ABOUT

Counselling and Psychotherapy in Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire, and Online

Essential Minds

My Background

I worked in the corporate sector for 25 years, running my own recruitment business and deriving great satisfaction from the challenge of this industry. However, over time, I noticed how people can end up feeling trapped, overburdened by mental health issues that they didn’t feel they could communicate to others. I also struggled in my own way, which is what led me to learning as much as possible about personal development – a journey that begun in 1993. Since then, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to educating those experiencing the same issues and supporting them manage their wellbeing more effectively.

As a counsellor, psychotherapist, and coach, I am always taking care to improve the quality of my service for clients, which is why I continue to expand my knowledge of modalities to this day. This includes spending time working for a men’s mental health charity and qualifying as a hypnotherapist in 2018.

Practice description

Essential Minds

If you are struggling with your personal development at work, or live with a more specific issue like depression, anxiety, or addiction, I am here to provide the tailored support you.

Personal Development

I have taken a particular interest in personal development since 1993 starting in the USA, researching extensively on the subject whilst running my own recruitment business.

Addiction

Many people in the corporate world battle with an addiction of some kind, whether it’s smoking, drinking, overeating, gambling, or any other behaviour. Addiction remains a taboo subject – something we struggle to talk about – but my practice is a safe, confidential, non-judgemental place to explore the reasons behind your addiction.

Depression

As I have seen on many occasions throughout my career, people tend to ignore their depression and push it further down – which only makes their situation worse. You might believe that your situation will never improve, and that you’ll always feel this way, but this is just not true.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a particularly prevalent problem in the high-energy corporate world. You might feel constantly anxious about deadlines, or struggle with the social pressures of the office. Perhaps you are experiencing panic attacks.

Trauma

My service involves helping people process trauma of all kinds. Problems like anxiety, addiction, or depression take root in early trauma that continues to influence how we think, feel, and behave in present day situations, and our work will therefore involve looking at the source of its trauma and understanding its role in your life.

Hypnotherapy

I have studied and practiced hypnotherapy for many years, often using this treatment when working with my clients – particularly those with trauma-related issues. By putting you in a relaxed state of hypnosis, we connect and engage with your subconscious mind, getting to the source of your issue, whether it’s addiction, depression, PTSD, or any kind of mental block.

My first session

Initial Assessment

To start with, we can have a brief free chat over the phone, which allows you to ask any questions and get a feel for the way I work, ahead of organising an initial assessment session at a time that suits you. During this first meeting, we will explore your thoughts and feelings as you experience them, as well as any past therapeutic experience, with me giving you unconditional positive regard and creating a safe space for you to feel comfortable and speak freely. We will establish why you came to therapy in the first place and what you want to get out of our sessions together.

Devise a Therapeutic Plan

After learning about your unique situation, we will then agree on a therapeutic roadmap that directly addresses your needs, whatever they may be, such as dealing with an addiction, personal development in the workplace, or overcoming depression. I call upon a variety of modalities to make sure every client receives a form of therapy that suits them. This could include hypnotherapy (particularly for trauma-based work), life coaching, CBT, psychodynamic therapy, or a combination of different techniques, depending on what your situation demands.

Follow Up

I can work with clients on a long-term, open-ended basis, or operate within a fixed timeframe (six to 12 weeks, for example). We will always reassess where we are in the therapeutic process at periodic junctures. Taking this flexible, responsive approach is so important, and I always encourage you to take an active role in our therapeutic relationship, as this makes our work so much more effective. It could be that we need to introduce a different modality, such as hypnotherapy, or introduce a more solution-based approach.

Along with one-to-one counselling and psychotherapy in Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire, and online, I also provide my service for groups in a corporate setting to improve awareness and understanding of mental health in the workplace.
