About me and my therapy practice

I’m Naeem – a therapist working with individuals and couples.

My work centers around helping clients to help them understand themselves better. Building awareness is key goal in therapy. It helps us look at the different indicators in our lives – our health and well-being or our connection with others – tell a story about what is happening in our lives.

The relationships we have with others are part of the way we develop and grow as people – understanding how we are in these different relationships with have with family, friends and partners can tell us a lot about how we think about ourselves.

The therapeutic space is somewhere you can start to speak about things that are important to you. You may know exactly why you want to enter therapy – or might not be sure beyond a feeling – both (or neither) are absolutely fine. Your time in therapy is ultimately about exploration and you set the pace of that.

What to expect…

You may know exactly why you want to enter therapy – or might not be sure beyond a feeling – both (or neither) are absolutely fine. Your time in therapy is ultimately about exploration and you set the pace of that.

Your relationship with the world around you is just as important as those with individuals and groups. Understanding this is a vital part of my work with individuals and couples.

Couples therapy

When working with couples - I focus on looking at the dynamics at play. These can be current issues, but we will explore past experiences, including family and previous relationships. Patterns of behaviour from the past may impact how we interact in the here and now.

A crucial part of our work together is establishing your goals. Whether you're aiming to repair a strained relationship or explore the possibility of separation, the focus is entirely up to you both.

When working with couples, the focus is on developing a way forward that resonates with both parties.

Practice description

I work with clients to help them to develop their own awareness about what maybe impacting them or causing them unease.

Therapy is a place where you can set aside the armor that you may have wear to get through your week, speak honestly about what you are feeling and perhaps start to think about what you’d like to do next.  However, I also recognise that you may not want to do that.

I have extensive experience of working with aspects of identity and difference gained initially through my voluntary work with community based organisations such as Switchboard,  local counselling charities and a cultural/religious organisation.

My work in these communities and observing the emotional impact that challenging situations have on individuals have drawn me to understand the impact of trauma and I am developing my knowledge further in this area.

Authenticity is an important part of my practice. I’m not here to judge or shame – and if you feel that happening, I encourage my clients to speak to be about it. The therapeutic relationship between client and therapist can reflect the client’s own relationship in the outside world; exploring these feelings in a space where there will not be judgement or shame can offer you a chance to reflect, review and understand what maybe happening – and importantly, helping you to decide if you want to act in a different way.

My first session

Individual therapy: The first session is a chance for us to understand each other. Some people have a very clear idea of what they want to speak about – others are not sure where to start. Both are fine and valid.

The first session is there for us both to consider what's brought you to therapy.  It's also a chance for us both to thinking about if we can work well together.

Couples therapy:  Couples therapy is for anyone who wants to improve their relationship. There is a focus on:

  • Understanding the individuals and why you're seeking therapy.
  • Identifying areas of difficulty or conflict.
  • Collaborating to create a new, more functional agreement.

Couples often seek therapy after experiencing heated arguments or a breakdown in trust. The most important factor is a willingness from all parties to engage honestly and openly. Change can be challenging, but it is possible.

An imbalance of individual needs and wants can disrupt a relationship. Communication can deteriorate, leading to discomfort and irritation. We are complex individuals with a wide range of experiences, and sometimes we struggle to communicate needs effectively.

I'm not an expert on your relationship - you are the experts.  I am committed to working with couples with empathy and honesty to help you co-create a new path forward.

If you'd like a conversation before diving into a first session, I offer a no obligation 15 minute conversation so we can get a feel of me and how I practice.  No matter what stage you're at in therapy, you decide if it's right for you.
