About me and my therapy practice
I’m an experienced Psychotherapist and I specialise in working with individual adults with a range of issues
I provide a supportive, confidential, inclusive, and non-judgemental space in which to talk about whatever you would like - even things that feel messy, unclear, or irrelevant - and where you can begin to move towards real, lasting change.
I offer therapy in person from my private and peaceful consulting room in Brighton's North Laine, a few minutes from the station, as well as online and over the phone. I also practice at a clinic and volunteer for the NHS in an acute psychiatric hospital.
I’ve worked as a clinician with a wide range of clients of different ages and backgrounds, with diverse issues, and in various settings, over several weeks, months, or years.
I'm a Member of BACP and an accredited psychotherapist registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).
I undertook a rigorous course of training and personal therapy over 5 years, including a PgDip in Psychodynamic Psychotherapeutic Counselling from Brighton University and the Clinical Qualification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF), together with additional training in CBT and psychosexual therapy.
I’m experienced at working with difference and diversity and my approach is open and inclusive. My practice is LGBTQIA+ affirmative.
I abide by the strict Ethical Framework of BACP, UKCP, and BPC. I am fully insured and I undergo regular Supervision and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). I hold a current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate.
I have a background in community work and pastoral care and I have experience of working with and listening to a wide range of people. I hold degrees in Maths and Theology.
Practice description
My core approach to therapy is psychodynamic, which understands that many of the ways we think, feel, and act can be influenced by our earlier life experiences, relationships, and the unconscious. By considering these things within a safe and containing space, and in the context of a trusting and empathetic relationship, we can come to understand ourselves, our relationships, and our thought and behaviour patterns better.
Over time this can lead to change, and help us to become more self aware and integrated people, and better able to face and negotiate life’s challenges. Based on the ideas of psychoanalysis, together with modern research and practice, this approach also focuses on the relationship between therapist and client, and works with your current issues as well as the past.
This approach is research validated and evidence based, and has been shown to be effective in helping with a range of issues.
I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach - together we can shape the work in a way that is appropriate and meaningful for you. I'm also influenced by ideas from Transactional Analysis (TA), CBT, psychosexual therapy, existential psychotherapy, and the ideas of Jung and Lacan.
Sessions last for 50 minutes and would normally be at the same time each week. I would encourage you to speak about whatever you would like, even if it seems irrelevant. I also work with dreams, which can be a useful tool for understanding our unconscious.
My first session
In our early sessions we'll explore what has brought you to therapy and the context around it: your background, relationships, and what you're currently struggling with. Over time, we can focus more deeply on patterns and root causes, and work together to find ways of understanding and addressing what's going on for you.
Most clients begin to feel a shift as the sessions progress, and a sense of having a safe place to return to each week.
