About me and my therapy practice

Are you struggling to fall asleep as you keep worrying about things? Maybe you have anxiety and at times feel completely overwhelmed or numb. Maybe it's having an impact on your relationship with your loved ones and more importantly how you feel about yourself.

-Things don't have to stay this way.-

What if

You could gain a sense of peace and contentment to your everyday life.

What if

You could become more self-confident and trust yourself more.

What if

You could break the self-destructive patterns that are keeping you from becoming the person you want to be.

Hi, I'm Maina.

I’m passionate about supporting adults with anxiety and depression. I have experienced how isolating and debilitating it can be.

People can say things like “just be positive” or “don’t worry about it”. It can be hard for them to understand that it isn’t as simple as just focusing on something else. I get it. It’s not something you can easily change.

How can I help you?

  • I can help you to gain a better understanding of your current challenges and find a positive way forwards.
  • Together, we can identify the background and triggers for your thoughts and feelings.
  • It will give you the opportunity to explore and process difficult emotions and help you to become unstuck from your current situation.
  • If wanted, I will support you in identifying and changing self-destructive behaviour patterns.

Professional Memberships and Qualifications:

-I have a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and am registered member of the BACP.

-Registered Accredited EFT/Tapping Practitioner (EFT International)

-I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Recent CPD Courses:

  • Anxiety Certification Course (Murrow and DuPont Spencer)
  • Calming the Anxious Brain (Dr. Pittman)
  • Cruse Bereavement Course
  • Breath The Doorway to Your Autonomic Nervous System (Lorna Evans)

Practice description

How do I work:

-As a psychodynamic therapist, I believe in order to be able to create long-term changes, it is essential to identify the root causes of your struggles. This will give you a chance to explore and process painful emotions and help you to become unstuck from your current situation.

I also believe in an holistic approach to wellbeing. So, if it is right for you, I can incorporate other approaches, such as;

-Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) theory to support you in changing unhelpful coping mechanisms and behaviour.

-Psychoeducation on how the nervous system works and incorporate breath work and body awareness. It can help you to regulate your emotions on a daily basis and enable you to connect with and express difficult feelings.

-EFT/Tapping is similar to acupuncture, but instead of using needles, pressure points are gently tapped on whilst focusing on the distressing issue. EFT can be incorporated into counselling sessions or done as separate sessions.

How to get started:

I understand it can be challenging to reach out when you are struggling and it is important to find the right counsellor for you.

That is why I provide a free 20 minutes phone call, so you can ask me any questions you might have and I can find out more about what is going on for you at the moment.

I would like counselling to be accessible to more people, so I use a sliding scale ranging from £45.00-£55.00 per session depending on your circumstances.

My first session

The first session takes 60 minutes and acts as an extension of our initial phone consultation.

During the session I will go through a counselling contract with you and give you the time to tell me more about what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to gain from it.

It will also give you an opportunity to meet me and ask me any questions you might have.

This will help you to decide if we are a good match and if you feel safe and comfortable to continue working with me.

From there, we can agree to work together in an open-ended way or within an agreed timeframe.

What clients have said about working with me:

"I left with a sense of hope as my anxiety and depression now had light. I am stronger than ever before and have been given the tools by Maina to cope with the knocks life throws at us." V.P

"Maina has such a calm and steady demeanour and creates a space which feels completely non-judgemental. This made me feel safe to open up and I was able to touch on some really vulnerable material in the knowledge that I would be supported throughout the session. I was able to work through current issues and also to release some things I have carried for a long time." Kat, B. Yorkshire

"She is thorough and thoughtful, making sure she really tunes into what is going on for you as an individual." Louise, P.

"Maina has helped me learn to feel safe in my body and I feel so much stronger for it. I would highly recommend Maina's EFT sessions." Kay B, Hitchin.
