About me and my therapy practice

Seeking therapy is a big step, welcome. I specialise in helping people with drink and drug use problems, I’ve been there myself- feelings of anxiety, depression, stress & anger. I’m a warm, experienced and qualified therapist & will settle you quickly. We’ll work to help you understand all the facets of what you’re experiencing and how they tie together. We’ll plan, trust one another and work it through.

My clients range from young people to high earning business owners & all in between. Drink and drugs don't differentiate in their effects on our emotions, fact is, we come to a point where we need some help. Welcome.

From your first counselling session you'll find me warm & approachable and safe and professional and non-judgemental. I am calm and trustworthy, and can help you explore your anxiety, depression and difficult, sometimes seemingly impossible feelings to manage, including feelings of anger and relationship problems.

Everyone is unique, so I blend evidence based approaches depending on who you are and where you are with your problem- Motivational Interviewing, CBT, mindfulness, Meta-Cognitive Therapy and aspects of the Twelve Step philosophy. I'm also in established recovery myself, I think that's important for clients to know.....It doesn't mean what's good for me is good for, I'm not directive like that, but it means I understand the feelings- the despair, the helplessness, the dread in the mornings, the anger at myself and maybe the slowly developing isolation. Do you relate to any of these?

I understand that sometimes we can feel isolated and down. Depressed or full of anxiety. Maybe there's grief and anger together and drinking or smoking or using drugs gives us the escape we need.

There is help and there is hope, please email and book in.

Appointments with me are £80, daytime and evening, walk and talk and zoom. Prices for home treatment are managed on an individual basis.

Practice description

Face to face, online across the UK and abroad and local walk and talk therapy provided.

I run a bespoke practice where I see clients traditionally in my rooms but I also see clients at their home (which has a different pricing structure) and online. Some clients see me once a week, some more frequently, some pay for a block of sessions, some pay contactless on the day. Clients may have just emerged from treatment, some need the safety of a familiar environment or it may be a situation that needs discrete management. To find out more please give me a call or email.

Some therapists say they can help with addiction or drink and drug problems but very few have actually experienced what it's like, very few have really been there. I understand addiction. I live my life today held by a 'whole recovery' and I now help others to work towards the same thing and battle the anxiety, depression and anger. Recovery is a bright place, but it takes work to get there. work on yourself that is, but with someone alongside you, who won't judge or tell you what they'd do if they were you- someone to listen.

My foundation is in person centred therapy- I strongly believe that you are the expert on yourself and our work together will be collaborative not directive.

You might be holding your home and work life together and planning on weekly sessions with me or just out of rehab and planning a couple of sessions a week to help stabilise your start.

I've a Masters in Addiction Psychology & Counselling alongside my personal experience of both active addiction and recovery. I'll use CBT and meta-cognitive therapy to help with your thinking. I'll weave motivational interviewing into our conversations as we explore your relationship with your substance of (no) choice and how you feel about change. There'll be relapse recognition and prevention (relapse ends in a drink or use-up, it doesn't start with one), and we'll work on behaviour recognition.

My first session

What can you expect from me?

No clipboards and no questionnaires- not in your first counselling session with me!

I'm a normal guy, easy to relate to and get along with yet professional, calm & relaxed and I'll provide a safe environment for you to settle in and begin to tell me your story. There'll be no judgement from me and you'll receive a warm and real empathy - I'll walk alongside you as you explore your feelings and how your life's shaping up for you.

I'm an integrative therapist but of course that has a person-centred underpinning so I won't put you on a couch and diagnose you- I believe you to be the expert on yourself, but as an experienced drug & alcohol specialist I know that there are other modalities we'll need to lean on.

Whether it's addiction, drinking too much alcohol, substance misuse, loss or bereavement, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger or an insidious mix of all of those feelings, I'll sit with you as you slowly and safely lift the lid on them and let the light in.

I personally think seeking help is a massively courageous step to take and I won't be taking that for granted. I'll provide safety for you -that's paramount- and a confidential space where you can talk to me in depth about the things you don't want others to know (work or loved ones for example). Sometimes we need to share what's going on but we don't have anyone to share to.

The methods I bring in to our sessions will be studied and evidence based and will depend on where you are in your journey and your change cycle, what you're feeling like today and what's important for you to work through in the here and now (are you beginning to explore change or are we far enough in that we're working on maintaining the change you've moulded).

You can expect understanding, empathy and methods that work. And you'll experience hope. Things will change.

We’ll work to help you understand all the facets of what you’re experiencing and how they tie together. We’ll plan, trust one another and work it through.

My clients range from young people to business owners- drink and drugs don't differentiate in their effects on our emotions, fact is, we come to a point where we need some help.

From your first counselling session you'll find me warm & approachable and safe and professional. I am non-judgemental, calm and trustworthy, and can help you explore your anxiety, depression and sometimes seemingly impossibly tough feelings, including feelings of anger, maybe relationship problems too. Maybe you want to stop and need someone side by side to steady you as you go.

Everyone is unique, so I blend research based approaches depending on who you are and where you are with your problem- Motivational Interviewing, CBT, mindfulness, Meta-Cognitive Therapy and aspects of the Twelve Step philosophy.

Practice description

Face to face, online across the UK and abroad and local walk and talk therapy provided.
