About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Peter. I'm a qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, offering a warm, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can explore what is happening in your life at your own pace.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. You may be struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, shame, relationships or sexuality, or perhaps you have reached a point where you know something needs to change but are unsure where to begin. You do not need to have everything figured out before coming to therapy.

My way of working is integrative, which means I draw on different therapeutic approaches depending on you and what you bring. My work is grounded in person-centred therapy, while also drawing on psychodynamic and attachment perspectives to explore how earlier experiences and relationships may influence the present. Where helpful, I can also incorporate CBT-based approaches and psychoeducation.

I have particular experience working with trauma and sexual violence, men's mental health, relationships, identity, sexuality, self-esteem and shame. I work affirmatively with LGBTQ+ clients and welcome conversations around culture, race, difference and belonging.

Alongside individual therapy, I am trained in couples and relationship counselling and am currently undertaking further specialist training in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy.

I believe therapy is not about telling you how to live your life. It is about developing a relationship in which you feel safe enough to be curious about yourself, understand patterns that may no longer serve you, and explore new ways of relating to yourself and others.

Practice description

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, particularly if you are used to managing things alone or find it difficult to talk about what you are experiencing. My aim is to provide a space where you do not have to arrive with the right words or know exactly what you want to work on.

I work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, shame, trauma, relationship difficulties, identity and sexuality. I have particular experience supporting survivors of sexual trauma and violence, and I understand that experiences of trauma can affect our relationships, sense of safety, self-worth and connection with our bodies.

I also work with couples experiencing relationship difficulties, including communication problems, conflict, intimacy concerns, infidelity and changes within their relationship.
Sexuality and sexual wellbeing can sometimes be difficult subjects to speak about. As part of my ongoing specialist training in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy, I can provide a space to explore concerns relating to sex, intimacy, sexual functioning, desire and relationships without judgement or embarrassment.

Our work will be collaborative. Sometimes we may explore experiences from your past and how they continue to influence you today. At other times, we might focus more directly on what is happening in the present, recognise patterns in thoughts, emotions or relationships, or develop practical ways of managing difficult feelings.

Most importantly, I will work at a pace that feels manageable for you. Therapy does not need to be about forcing yourself to disclose experiences before you are ready. We can begin wherever you are.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and to explore what has brought you to therapy. There is no expectation for you to tell me everything in our first meeting.

I will usually ask a little about what is happening for you currently, what you would like support with and some relevant aspects of your background and relationships. We can also discuss what you hope might be different as a result of therapy.

Just as importantly, the first session gives you an opportunity to experience how I work and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. You are welcome to ask questions about therapy or raise any concerns you may have.

If we decide to continue, we can agree how we will work together, including the regularity of sessions and practical arrangements.
