About me and my therapy practice

As a couple, things may not have felt right for a while. That might be because of a big change – an affair, a baby, losing your job – or an accumulation of small things that add up over time.

With many relationships ending in acrimony, it’s better to tackle any problems before those fault lines get too deep. But there’s only so far you can go, talking between the pair of you.

Connecting with trust and intimacy can be hard. You think you want a future together, but you need to be certain you’re on the right path.

I’m David, a counsellor in Fitzrovia, Greenwich, Clapham, and Balham. I work with couples - and people in other types of relationships - to help them get to the heart of any problems and map a new route through life.

I’ll be by your side, whatever you’re going through.

In a couple, there’s more going on than the relationship between you. There are also your separate back stories, and the narratives you’ve learned along the way. That’s a lot of untangling to do, and it’s not surprising if you can’t do it alone.

Having a non-judgemental outsider who’s trained to deeply listen, and pick out the important things you say (and don’t say) could be the most important investment you make together.

You don’t want a couples counsellor who’s going to take one side over the other. And you definitely don’t want someone who’s going to impose their ideas of what a ‘normal’ relationship is. I don’t believe there is such a thing.

You evolve and grow, and so your relationship must as well.

Learn how to disagree amicably

Ask for your needs to be met, and get OK with them not being met

Put your relationship on a new footing

Get to the heart of the real issues in your relationship, and tackle them one by one

“Having a baby totally flipped our world upside down… Now that we’ve been to therapy, I can see that it’s way more rewarding building something new together, rather than try to go back to how it was.”

S, Fiztrovia

Practice description

You can bring whatever you like to our sessions. You can be angry, sad, uncommunicative – nothing either of you say will upset or disturb me.

What I will do is deeply listen and empathise. I’m intuitive – so I’ll ask the right questions at the right time – and compassionate. Mostly, I want both (or all) of you to feel safe with me.

You might not realise it now, but you’ve already got your answers. Yet there’s so much getting in the way, it’s hard to know where to begin.

A real change for the better might seem a long journey, but it’s worth the effort.

I’ll help you clear the weeds, and uncover your best route forwards.

You’ll understand yourself (and your partner) with deep compassion.

You’ll learn how to communicate clearly and lovingly, avoiding judgement.

You’ll set healthy boundaries and feel good about keeping them.

As we work together, you’ll have the weekly support you need. And when we’re done, you’ll have the tools to retain that support, whatever life throws at you.

My first session

I provide online therapy via Zoom.

If you want to find out if we’re a good fit, I offer a no-obligation 20 minute introductory call. This is for you to get to know me, and to decide if I’m right for you.

Then if you choose to go ahead, we’ll arrange weekly sessions. You might prefer a set number of sessions, or decide to work on an open-ended basis. It depends on what’s most useful for both (or all) of you right now.

In our first session, I’ll get to know you and your story. Then we’ll work out what you want to achieve in our time together.

If you want to learn more, please visit my website horizons-therapy.co.uk. You can contact me directly from there, or send me a message via the form on the left.

I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

About me and my therapy practice

I offer a safe, supportive and confidential space to bring any concerns that you wish.  As we have all felt lost, alone or unheard at some point in our lives, I think that everyone can benefit from counselling.

In the therapy room I hold the space for you to share your story and to share what the world looks like for you. It’s a confidential, non-judgemental space for you to explore the things that you want to.

Practice description

I believe that no two clients are the same and so I take an integrative approach.

This means that I have a range of different tools, which can be combined and used depending on what is best for each client.  I may use warm person centred techniques to allow you to share your thoughts and feelings, and so relax into yourself.  On other occasions, I might take a more pyschodynamic approach helping you become aware of how past situations or events may still be influencing your behaviours today, giving you new options for tomorrow.

My first session

I offer a free 20minute introductory call (usually on Zoom). This allows for you to ask any questions, for me to share a bit more of how I work and for us to decide if we want to start working together. There is no obligations if you wish to have an inital call.

In the first 50 minute session we will go through our therapy agreement and there will be a few questionnaires that we will fill in together. This will help me to get to know you a bit better and give us a chance to set some aims and goals for our work.

From then on the sessions will be led by you and what you wish to bring to explore. There will be regualar reviews of our work together.
