About me and my therapy practice
Everyone calls me Nat for short, so feel free to do the same.
In my view, the most important part of therapy is trust. It should be a place where you can feel safe letting your guard down, and say anything without feeling embarrassed or ashamed. I know from having my own counselling (yes, I've struggled too), that finding someone you 'click with' is a huge part of the process. I also know that building trust can take time, and this applies to therapy too.
People often describe me as easy-going, friendly, and say that my calm nature is contagious. If you choose to have counselling with me, I hope you'll find me to be warm, open-minded, and affirming.
Experience:
I started out as a general counsellor, so have a good deal of experience with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, anger, loss, relationships, and feeling generally unsettled.
Over the years, I have also found that I work well with people who need time to build trust, and value a gentle pace, particularly those who have experienced abuse, trauma, neglect, or harm in relationships, and may feel unsafe with others, on high alert, or disconnected from themselves.
I also value working with queer identity and neurodiversity, as well as anyone who feels like an outsider or othered by the judgments of society. In a world full of rigid labels and black & white views, it's easy to find ourselves lost, isolated, or exhausted. Although I can't change the world, I can offer a small haven of acceptance, where you can drop the masks, take a pause, and just be yourself.
Qualifications:
- MSc Counselling & Psychotherapy (Distinction) - Keele Uni
- Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling - Keele Uni
- BA (Hons) Business Management (MMU)
I've also completed specific training in Trauma Informed Therapy, Abuse, C-PTSD, Neuro-affirming Therapy, and Relationship Counselling.
Practice description
In our sessions, we'll talk things through at your pace, and see if we can help you feel more at ease. This might involve:
- Dealing with emotions and memories that feel heavy or consuming
- Challenging unhelpful thought patterns
- Looking to understand or make sense of things
- Practicing acceptance
- Exploring different perspectives
- or just letting it all out, having a vent, cry, laugh, or swear - whatever helps you feel lighter!
These days, the internet can provide you with many coping tools and quick fixes to try. I therefore prefer to lean away from providing solutions or structured exercises in therapy, and focus on providing a steady space, built on human connection and straightforward jargon-free conversation. Somewhere you can share the load with another person.
I believe that through reflection and self-awareness, we can understand ourselves better, and build a life that feels more fulfilling, but that this can take time, and isn't always a straight road.
I'll sometimes ask questions, offer observations/suggestions, or share my knowledge, but won't patronise you or pressure you into anything that doesn't feel right.
You don't need to come with a goal, or anything neat and tidy, just turn up as you are! No topics are taboo, and I'll always treat you as an equal.
