About me and my therapy practice

Hello. My name is Julie, and I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor. I am a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and I abide by their Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.

I aim to offer you an environment that feels safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental, in which you can be open about the issues and hopes which have led you to counselling.

I have been supporting bereaved clients of all ages for over 10 years. I have supported children and adolescents in school settings as a Registered General Nurse and Counsellor, and I currently work for two charitable young person organisations as a sessional counsellor alongside my private practice. I also train professionals in schools and agencies to support children and bereaved young people.

Practice description

Our sessions are an opportunity for you to explore the things most affecting you in a confidential and respectful way. I will listen, support and value you on your counselling journey. We will always work collaboratively and agree on what feels right for you- the client- or your child.

When working with children, I always consider the family context. I may also be creative and use playful approaches to enable them to tell their stories or unlock memories they have difficulty with.

My first session

It is important that you choose a counsellor that you feel comfortable with. Before the first session, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation for you to ask me any questions you may have about my way of working, which should help you get a feel for whether we would make a good team.

In our first full session, we would discuss what has brought you to counselling, and establish our counselling agreement. These sessions are your time, and I will take your lead on topics of discussion unless you have specifically asked for purist CBT or solution-focused brief therapy. In these instances, a more structured approach would be needed.

For children aged 18 years and younger, the free 15-minute phone consultation is with the parent/carer/guardian to get a picture of the child’s life and any particular issues. The child can choose to be present at this phone call if they wish.

Children and teenagers attend the initial session with a parent or caregiver. This first session is to determine whether I feel I can support your child moving forward and whether your child is comfortable with me in the therapy room or online.
