About me and my therapy practice
Reaching out for support is a brave step in the right direction. Therapy can help when we are struggling with challenging events, emotions, relationships and situations. Perhaps you feel isolated and alone, lost or hopeless, or just not quite yourself, unsure of what’s wrong and what can help.
As a professionally trained Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I can help you find a way to a better place. I provide a compassionate, confidential, non-judgemental and emotionally safe space for us to explore whatever you are facing. I draw on a range of psychodynamic principles and theories, combining various approaches and techniques to help you explore your current challenges. Together, we'll make sense of your feelings in the present while considering how past experiences, early life messages, and events may be influencing your emotional responses today.
As a result of this exploration, you will gain a deeper understanding of yourself and others around you. Through this increased awareness, we can work together to facilitate acceptance, healing and growth and look at new ways of relating to ourselves and others.
If this resonates with you and you feel ready to take that crucial first step, then please call, write or message me today to discuss how I can help you. I look forward to hearing from you and being part of your journey.
Therapeutic Parent Consultations - Helping parents make sense of their child’s emotional world. Is for parents who want to better understand their child’s emotional distress, challenging behaviours, or mental health difficulties. The sessions provide a reflective, supportive space to explore what may be going on for the child, what might be triggering difficulties, and how parents can respond in ways that feel more attuned and effective. For more information please don't hesitate to contact me or see my website https://lorrainegilltherapy.co.uk/
Practice description
I offer a free 20-minute telephone or online consultation before arranging an initial session. It is important that we both understand your issues and expectations to see if Psychotherapeutic Counselling or The Therapeutic Parenting Consultations are the right approach for you. It's also a chance for you to ask any questions and get a sense of whether you feel we would be a good fit for working together.
We will then choose a time mutually suitable for our sessions. Each session is 50 minutes long.
I will send a link to our sessions at least 24 hours before. I will provide you with information about what platform we will be using, what should happen if we lose connection and a copy of the contract and confidentiality agreement prior to our first session.
You are welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns prior to our first session.
My first session
In our first sessions, I will take a more directive approach, asking about your current situation, what has brought you to therapy, your past therapy experiences, your family history and childhood, as well as your hopes and expectations for our work together.
We will then collaboratively agree on a goal for the following six or so sessions, identifying an area that you would like to specifically focus on during therapy. Don't worry if you're unsure about this; this can be an emerging goal as the work and the relationship develop.
We will then meet weekly or fortnightly to explore this area as well as any current stressors or issues that may come up for you and, review progress and approach every 6-8 sessions.
Although I am predominantly client-led in my approach, I do ask questions and may occasionally challenge what has been said when I believe it may be therapeutically advantageous. However, my approach is always one of acceptance, curiosity and compassion. Rest assured, I won't push and we will take things at your pace.
With regards to the Therapeutic Parent Consultations - these will be short-term, and focused on your and your child's needs. We will explore your current challenges and approach and consider what might be going on for you and your child in these moments. I will introduce any relevant psychoeducation and therapeutic parenting approaches as well as signposting you to any additional support or resources, if appropriate. You may even find that one session might be enough to increase your understanding.
