About me and my therapy practice
'Healing takes time, and asking for help is a courageous step' (Marisa Hargitay)
Hi my name is Helen and I have over 25yrs experience of working with children and young people in schools, through my private therapy practice and most recently as a psychotherapist within CAMHS (NHS).
I work from my dedicated therapy room at home in Leighton Buzzard. I have an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling & Psychotherapy with Children & Adolescents and have been working as a psychodynamic therapist with young people, aged 4-19, for the past 10 years.
I wholeheartedly believe that ... 'behind every behaviour is a feeling and behind that feeling there is a need. When we meet the need instead of focusing on the behaviour we begin to treat the cause, not the symptom'
Practice description
'You never have to apologise for being yourself'
I specialise in practising psychodynamic psychotherapy, with 4-19 year olds. Psychodynamic therapy is a longer term talking therapy, in which I also utilise creative and symbolic play to aid communication and expression.
My therapy room provides a safe, non-judgmental space for a young person to come and just 'be'. They will communicate what is on their mind through talking, playing or creative expression. As the therapeutic relationship and trust builds, themes will begin to emerge in the young person’s communications. We are then able to think and reflect together on what it is they are bringing to their sessions each week.
Therapy is not about giving advice or telling a young person what to do, as they often have plenty of adults doing that. Our therapy sessions will be about working together, where I am able to support them in finding a way through that is right for them. I am here to facilitate their journey and work with them to unravel what is going on for them.
I can also work closely with parent/carers and schools where applicable as a holistic approach is often the most beneficial to the young person. However, confidentiality is maintained at all times.
'Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn't mean you have to do it alone'
(Lisa Olivera)
My first session
'There is nothing more important than your mental health'
I often find that work starts best with a consultation phone call with the parent/carer or young person (dependent on age, 16+).
Next would be an initial meeting in my therapy room with the young person and parent/carer, as appropriate, for around 30mins.
If the young person then wishes to go ahead with therapy, then I usually recommend starting with three sessions (50mins each) on a weekly basis to give them the chance to get to know me and the space in which we will be working together.
After this period, work can continue, weekly, for as long as the young person feels they would like to.
Young people often prefer to take a break during school holidays and this can be accommodated.
'It's ok to not be ok. Just don't give up'
'The more you feel your feelings, the easier it is to understand them'
