About me and my therapy practice

I’m an Integrative counsellor/psychotherapist. Initially I came to therapy through ongoing interests in philosophy, psychology, sociology and art; I was interested in how each of these areas and their intersections might help us understand more of ourselves and the world around us. Counselling and psychotherapy seemed a natural extension of this – a place people could talk more openly and reflectively about how they felt, what they thought, and how they experience their lives and relationships. I have always been drawn to these kinds of conversations and am hugely esteeming of their value in helping us navigate life and its attendant challenges and tensions; they certainly have been for me.

The content of sessions is of course unique to each person, but some examples of themes commonly explored might be love, work, authenticity, family, anxiety, depression, loneliness, identity, loss, trauma, life transitions. Together we work to create an ongoing, unhurried dialogue that we can pick up each week and use to explore whatever feels most important to you at the time.

I think therapy can be at its most impactful when we feel we can speak candidly. For this to happen there needs to be a level of trust in the relationship, so it can be important to find a therapist that you feel comfortable with, and that you think would be a good fit for you. I take this seriously and aim always to be a warm, collaborative and human sort of a presence.

Practice description

My training is in Integrative counselling and psychotherapy, which means that I draw on aspects of different theoretical models and theories, most notably person-centred theory, existential thinking, and psychodynamic theory.

In practice this means that I believe that through engaged curiosity, patience and empathy – an atmosphere can be created in which it becomes easier to access self-knowledge, insight, and emotional awareness. I see many of the issues discussed in therapy as being part of an individual's unique and personal experience of some of life’s fundamental and existential issues – anxiety, loss, uncertainty, isolation, freedom and responsibility. Also that I would be curious to think about how patterns in the here and now might be related to early experience in childhood, to consider how attachment is experienced, and to work with dreams where there is a shared interest.

My first session

I offer a free 20 - 30 minute initial meeting to give us chance to meet and see if you think we'd be a good fit for working together.

This gives us space to talk about what you're looking for from therapy, to speak a bit about the parameters and practicalities of sessions, and to get a sense of how you find talking with me.

Please feel free to get in touch if this is of interest and you'd like to arrange a time to meet or have any questions at all.
