About me and my therapy practice

Hello and a warm welcome! I’m Emma and I’m a fully qualified, BACP registered psychotherapist.

I understand that everyone has a unique experience in life and can face different challenges along the way, however I believe that everyone has the potential for growth and change, given the opportunity in a safe and supportive environment. I believe that our experiences throughout life can contribute to our perceptions of self and how we interact with the world around us. Therapy can help you to take a step back and take a look at what is going on for you from a wider perspective, as well as exploring aspects in more detail to help strengthen your understanding of self and your own resourcefulness.

Fundamentally, you are the expert in your own life. In a caring and non-judgemental way, I will always encourage you to voice your own perspective on your experiences (past and present), get to know how you really feel about a situation, and empower you to choose how you want to live you life going forward, based on your values and what's most important to you.

We can explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and find ways to navigate challenges in your life that are most meaningful to you. I can help to develop your self-awareness and understanding, a sense of compassion and acceptance for the more vulnerable parts of yourself, and support you in finding your way through to becoming more content with the relationship you have with yourself and others. Always going at a pace that is comfortable for you.

Practice description

Coming to therapy isn’t always an easy step, it can often feel daunting opening up to someone you don’t know. One of my main aims in therapy is to build up a trusting therapeutic relationship with you. We can spend a bit of time getting to know each other at the beginning to help support you in feeling comfortable in the space before getting started.

I work in a collaborative and integrative way – which means I can incorporate aspects from different theoretical approaches into the way we work, and together we can figure out what works best for you depending on your preferences, your needs, and my training experience. My practice is built from a person-centred theoretical foundation – which means that your individuality and autonomy is at the heart of the way I work.

I have experience working in different settings (including charity, community, and low-cost services, as well as private practice), working with people dealing with an array of issues including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, workplace stress, relationship issues, women's health issues, and bereavement in particular.

I am committed to providing an anti-discriminatory and inclusive practice, and as a registered member of the BACP I adhere to the Ethical Framework outlined on their website.

My first session

I work with adults aged 18+ in the UK.

I offer in-person/face-to-face sessions in Leeds city centre (Evolve Counselling) on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays. I can also offer therapy via telephone or video call at flexible times throughout the week (Monday-Friday) .

I provide therapy on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis - whatever is best for your needs and circumstances. I offer short-term and long-term therapy. Your preferences can be discussed in an introductory session. I will provide regular opportunities to check in and review therapy progress along the way.

The fee for a 50-minute session is £60.

I can offer a free 30-minute introductory session via telephone or video call to get to know each other and see if we would get along working together. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.

Please feel free to email me on emmahetheringtontherapy@gmail.com to schedule an introductory session.
