About me and my therapy practice
Anxious about taking that first step? Not sure if counselling is for you? Worried about finding the right counsellor? It's ok, I get it! I've been there too, asking myself those same kind of questions like, 'What if I hate it?', 'How do I find someone who I feel comfortable talking to and who won't judge me?', 'Where do I even start?''. The fact that you're even here, looking at options, means you have taken that first step and that you are open to the prospect of finding help and support. That's a great start!
I'm Mel and I'm a qualified counsellor based in Leigh-on-Sea Essex. Taking that first step in reaching out for help can be very daunting but it can also be the start of something hugely positive and beneficial for you. I’m here to help you take that step and to be with you on your journey.
I am an integrative counsellor which means I use various methods and concepts from Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Transactional Analysis Therapy. I do have a special interest in Anxiety, Low Confidence and Self Esteem issues, but I offer support for a wide range of issues, such as; but not restricted to, addiction, abuse, bereavement, trauma and relationships.
I am an Accredited Member of the National Society of Counselling (NCS) and I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which means I adhere to both of their Ethical Frameworks at all times.
Practice description
I offer a completely non-judgmental safe space where confidentiality is of upmost importance. There is no pressure to continue, just the opportunity to see if you feel comfortable and want to proceed.
As we are all individuals, the therapy I offer is very much tailored specifically to you because there is no 'one size fits all'.
My first session
During our first session, we go through the Client/Counsellor contract which covers things such as cancellations, confidentiality, fees and goal setting. Once we have completed this, we then go on to do an informal assessment where I ask for general information such as a brief medical history and medications, what kind of support network you have, career and home situations.
This first session is mostly an opportunity for us to meet and see if we feel that we are the 'right fit' for each other and for you to see if you feel comfortable, without any pressure to commit to further sessions. The aim is to make you feel at ease, so it is all very low key and relaxed and not an intense experience at all.
