About me and my therapy practice
People come to counselling for many different reasons. Life may feel difficult or overwhelming, something may have happened that is hard to make sense of, or you may be struggling with thoughts or feelings that are affecting everyday life. Sometimes there may not be one particular reason — just a sense that something doesn't feel quite right, or a wish to understand yourself better.
Counselling gives you the opportunity to talk openly with a trained professional who is outside your everyday life, with the focus on you and what you are experiencing. My role as a counsellor is not to tell you what to do or try to change you, but to work alongside you as we explore what is happening, become curious about thoughts, feelings and patterns, and begin to understand why you may think, feel or respond in the ways that you do.
I am a qualified integrative counsellor working with adults and young people aged 11+, offering face-to-face counselling in Ash (GU12), near Aldershot, Farnham and Camberley, as well as online across the UK.
Alongside my private practice, I work as a counsellor in a secondary school, supporting young people aged 11–16. I also hold a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Adolescents.
My experience includes working with anxiety and overthinking, confidence and self-esteem, relationship and family difficulties, work-related stress and periods of change or transition. If helpful, counselling may also involve exploring past experiences and relationships, and becoming curious about how these might connect with the way you feel about yourself, respond to situations or relate to others now.
Practice description
My approach is integrative, with a foundation in person-centred counselling. This means you and what you bring to counselling remain at the centre of our work together. I can draw on different therapeutic ideas and approaches where they may be helpful, rather than following a set programme or one-size-fits-all approach.
This might include exploring patterns in thoughts or behaviour, looking at how past experiences may connect with what is happening now, or using practical strategies to support you with particular difficulties. What we focus on will depend on you, what you would like from counselling and what feels helpful as our work develops.
I place a great deal of importance on the therapeutic relationship. Trust and connection do not automatically happen simply because two people are sitting together in a counselling room; they develop as we work together. There is no expectation that you need to talk about everything straight away, and our counselling relationship can develop at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for you to get a sense of whether it feels comfortable to work together.
You are welcome to share as much or as little as you feel ready to. Some people arrive with a clear idea of what they would like to talk about, while others are less sure. There is no expectation that you need to have everything figured out before you come.
We will also go through the counselling agreement, including confidentiality and how I work, so that everything feels clear. There will be time for you to ask any questions and to talk about what you would like from counselling.
