About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I am Julie a Therapeutic Counsellor. I have more than 30 years of experience in offering support to individuals to empower them to make positive changes in their lives.
At times you may experience difficulties in life for example loss or bereavement, issues with your relationships, work, finances or you may be feeling ‘stuck’ or unsure what to do. You may be feeling anxious or low and may struggle to identify the reason that you are feeling unsettled or unsure. Counselling can help you understand yourself, make sense of your world and the people in it.
I draw upon the person-centred model to establish a therapeutic relationship. This is about listening to you with empathy so that I can try to understand your lived experience. However, I also use therapeutic techniques and concepts from various counselling theories to create a tailored approach for each individual client.
My aim is to create a peaceful environment, free from any judgement so that you can feel safe talking about your feelings and concerns.
Practice description
Although our therapy sessions will be based on talking things through, I believe that there isn’t one approach to therapy that works for everyone or every situation. We’re all different, and I will work with you as an individual to find an approach that best suits your individual needs and what you’re going through. This may include bringing in elements of different counselling theories or offering tools to help you explore and cope with your problems. This is known as Integrative Therapy.
Also, sometimes introducing a creative element can be helpful – for example using stones or journaling. Creativity can help when words may not be enough, or where you feel ‘stuck’ or are struggling to express your thoughts and feelings. Working in this way can also provide an opportunity for further discussion or bring deeper understanding.
My first session
I offer a free 20 minute introductory online session or phone call where we can discuss how I might support you and talk through any concerns. We will discuss what has brought you to counselling and whether we feel we would be able to work together for your counselling journey.
Once you have decided that you would like to go ahead, I will book you in for a session and send you a copy of the therapeutic contract for you to review.
In our first session, we’ll have a chance to go through the therapy contract and agree how we will work together. I’ll invite you to share more about what’s been troubling you, your background, and any previous experience you’ve had with therapy. We’ll take everything at your own pace, and there’s absolutely no pressure to share everything straight away.
