About me and my therapy practice

Hello , my name is Karen Martin and I am a counsellor and psychotherapist. Thank you for looking at my profile page. I am a client centred therapist who strongly believes that no one should be suffering with issues they can’t resolve alone. Working with adults to get stability and balance back in their life. I support through improving self - awareness and emotional regulation using talk therapy and EMDR (a powerful modality for clients who have past trauma. Using EMDR as a powerful tool to stop the past negativity affecting the present.)

I work both face to face, via telephone and digitally by zoom – whatever way suits the client. Together we will explore the journey that brought you to therapy. Working besides you to look at beliefs which may not be serving you so together we can delve into alternate ways at looking at situations in life. I work with clients who may be dealing with stress, anxiety or low self - esteem triggered by life events. People struggling with loss and those wanting to find a sense of purpose. The outcome being that you will gain a better more fulfilling life on your own terms.

Led by you we will explore which form of therapy serves you best developing self - awareness of your own needs so that you can make decisions in your life that support you. Standing beside you and developing a trusting relationship where feeling at ease and being able to share in a place of safety is an important starting point. 

 My therapy style is warm and interactive. I believe in treating anyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. Actively listening to your story in a nonjudgemental manner. Knowing that the first step into therapy is the hardest, together we will work to support and empower you moving forward with your life. 

Practice description

Within my practice we look at and agree on a  contract in which all the work is framed from. 

I work with my clients in an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Developing a trusting caring relationship is important within our sessions.My approach combines cognitive behaviour, humanistic, psychodynamic or EMDR. I will tailor our sessions and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs. Sessions are reviewed intermittently. Notes are taken to support the process and supervision - specified within the contract - occurs to support both you and me as your therapist in providing you with the best service possible. Session occur weekly at the same time and day unless specified in advance. The way session are carried out - face to face, telephone or via zoom is determined by the client.

It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards change. If you are ready to take that step, I am here to support and empower you.

My first session

I offer a free 10 minute session over the phone where I provide details within our contract and an initial assessment form.  I email these documents to you after our session for you to read and agree by sending them back via email with a written agreement that you have read and agreed. 

We discuss what brought you to therapy and here you can ask any questions which may support you in your decision making. 

I can send information on any of the types of therapy which you will be able to look at gaining insight into which you feel will benefit. The type of therapy can change as sessions progress. 

I will talk about a CORE scale which provides information to support your counselling sessions and acts as a baseline.
