About me and my therapy practice
Hello there, my name is Lynn Guyan, thank you for visiting my profile. I understand that beginning counselling can feel intimidating and you may feel unsure about the whole process, so let me introduce myself and how I work.
My professional journey has always centred around helping others, from supporting adults with additional needs in their home and communities, working with children and young people in residential and school settings to working in private practice as a complementary therapist focused on improving mental health and well-being. This background inspired me to transition into counselling, aiming to integrate both practices to enhance mental health outcomes for the individuals I work with.
I began studying counselling in 2010, pursued a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Counselling at Abertay University in 2015 and completed my MSc in Counselling in 2023.
Practice description
In the last few years since I qualified, I’ve supported adults and young people (aged 10–18) across private, public, and third sector settings. My expertise includes working with complex trauma, mental health challenges and substance-related issues. I utilise a trauma-informed approach, incorporating specific strategies and techniques to empower clients to regain control of their lives. As a pluralistic counsellor, I draw upon various theories and methods, offering a broad range of resources to help clients make sense of their experiences.
I’m passionate about the outdoors, often spending time at my allotment. I believe nature offers therapeutic benefits and I recently trained to provide Walk and Talk therapy sessions. Outdoor therapy is especially beneficial for clients who have experienced complex trauma, as it offers an effective way to reset the nervous system and lessens the intensity that face-to-face sessions can sometimes bring.
I tailor therapy to each client’s needs, working at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.
Further qualification and training:
Diploma in counselling Children and Young People
Diploma in Counselling People Towards Behaviour Change (SAAC)
Trauma Enhanced Practitioner level 3 - Safety and Stabilisation
Reversing Adversity Trauma Training - Carolyn Spring
Scottish Mental Health First Aid training
General First Aid training (St. Andrews First Aid)
My first session
In the first instance I offer a free no obligation 20 minute chat either via telephone call or zoom. This is to give you the opportunity to talk to me before deciding whether counselling with me feels right and booking your first session.
If you decide to book a session I will send you some necessary paperwork, which we will discuss at the beginning of your first session and answer any questions you may have.
My work is collaborative so it would be useful to identify what your hopes are for counselling and we can discuss this in the first session to identify how we may work together to achieve the outcome you desire.
