About me and my therapy practice

Are you looking for a different approach to counselling? One that takes us outdoors and connects with the natural world?

I’m Janine, a counsellor and ecotherapist based in Runcorn, Cheshire, and working with clients out in places like Runcorn Hill, Frodsham Hill, Wigg Island, Moore and the Bridgewater Canal.

Sometimes, our sessions may feel similar to what happens in a therapy room – it’s mostly about the two of us talking. Other times, nature may come to the fore and I can facilitate your more direct connection as you seek guidance from the natural world. Nature can become my co-therapist as we immerse into the land, the weather and the seasons and connect with the other beings around us.

Being out in nature has proven benefits for our mental wellbeing and research is increasingly showing how it can help with personal therapy in particular.

I trained integratively, which means I can draw on a number of therapeutic approaches in our work together, tailoring my approach in collaboration with you and what’s going on for you. The main approach that is fundamental to my practice is person-centred therapy. This means I will listen deeply to you, attuning not only to your words, but to the nuances of your tone of voice, body language, the shifts and tensions in what you share with me. I aim to offer a non-judgmental attitude – this means every part of you can be welcomed in, listened to and accepted.

I’m down to earth and friendly and occasionally my sense of humour will sneak out. As our therapeutic alliance grows, I may challenge you. But I won’t tell you what I think you should do and I won’t promise any quick fixes – because you are not a problem to be solved but a fellow human with your own inner wisdom striving to survive and hoping to thrive in this modern world we find ourselves in.

Practice description

If you choose outdoor sessions, we’ll decide on locations collaboratively so you know where you’re going. I also have a therapy room at the Old Police Station in Runcorn and the capacity to work online so I can offer a traditional setting or a combined approach. I charge £52 per 50-minute session however we choose to meet.

If we head outdoors, we may walk, we may pause, we may take camping chairs or find a bench and sit. Although outdoor counselling is sometimes known as ‘walk and talk’, it does not have to involve walking, and I aim to make it accessible regardless of physical ability. Similarly, we don’t have to head out in any weather – we can switch to therapy room or online to meet your preferences and needs.

Ultimately, the therapeutic space is your space. Your space to express your thoughts and feelings fully without fear of judgment. Your space in which your pain can be expressed, acknowledged, accepted. Your space to explore who you are and what is important to you in life. We may explore early life experiences that have had an impact on you or defence mechanisms you use to cope. We may look at patterns of thinking that affect your emotions and actions.

Some clients have a number of sessions in mind when they first come to see me, others come for counselling on an ongoing basis for as long as they want to. Some come once or twice and decide I'm not the counsellor for them or it's not the right time for this stage of their therapy journey - and that's also ok.

I hold an MSc in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, am a registered member of the BACP working within their ethical framework and I am insured.

My first session

I offer a free initial consultation by phone, which usually takes around 15-20 minutes, so we can explore the possibility of working together. It's your chance to get to know me a little and decide if I feel like the right therapist for you, and my chance to get to know a little about what brings you to counselling and how I feel I may be able to help.

Following that, we can arrange your first session outdoors, online or in my therapy room. I do have further info on my website, or I can send it by email, about how outdoor counselling sessions work.

All sessions are 50 minutes and cost £52.

I aim to collaborate with clients around accessibility to outdoor spaces so please get in touch if you would like to discuss this.

I check my email and voicemail Monday to Friday at least once a day and aim to reply to enquiries within 36 hours.

This directory entry was reviewed in January 2026 and I have current availability for new clients.
