About me and my therapy practice
Before qualifying I worked for over 27 years with people with learning disabilities as support worker, team leader, service manager and trainer.
I am a person-centred and experiential counsellor and psychotherapist which means that alongside creating a space to talk through what you are bringing to sessions I will also invite you to notice and listen to your body and, if it feels appropriate, support you to explore the relationship between your thoughts, emotions and physical feelings.
I see therapy as a space in which to be seen, heard and met as you are and, in doing so, be supported to see, hear and understand yourself more. Key to this is my providing an empathic and non-judgemental approach. I am not the expert on your life but hope to be able to stay with you and respond to what comes up for you so that we can work together on your priorities and needs.
During counselling you may find yourself talking about difficult experiences, thoughts, emotions, we will work at your pace, and you will decide what we talk about.
Practice description
My therapeutic work includes working with :-
a charity supporting those who have been bereaved by suicide
those affected by cancer and long term chronic conditions, both individuals themselves and family members and friends.
those affected by gambling related harms including with couples as they process the impact of gambling relationship
those with ADHD, Autism
as well as general counselling and therapy support.
I have additional training in working with couples supporting them with communication difficulties.
As a member of the International Pre-Therapy Network I am training in Pre-therapy and Contact Work as a way of working with those who are contact impaired including people with learning disabilities, severe autism, dementia, psychosis, acquired brain injury
My first session
I provide a free 20 minute consultation, done online or by phone, in which we can talk about what hope to bring to counselling, any questions you have about the practicalities of sessions and to essentially give you an opportunity to see if we would be a good fit.
There is no assumption on my part that you will choose to commit to sessions. You can take your time to decide if this does feel like a good fit and if it is you can contact me as needed and we will take it from there i.e. I would then send on a copy of the client agreement and on return of a signed copy we would book in a first full session.
