About me and my therapy practice

“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and die with their song still inside them”

Perhaps Thoreau's quote isn't 100% accurate but does capture something which is backed by research. Namely, whilst men don’t suffer more psychological disorders than women overall, the way men suffer them can be more destructive and problematic as they tend to externalise their suffering in the form of violence, substance abuse, anger, aggression etc. Moreover, men’s psychological suffering is further compounded by men often hiding their issues and being reluctant to report symptoms.

My mission is to work with men to help them become the type of man they want to be and so to lead their 'best lives'.

Areas I can help with include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • First counselling session
  • Phobias
  • Relationships
  • Trauma

Practice description

Counselling is a unique journey comprising of my approach, your needs, and the specific issue you bring That said, here’s a list of some of the key parts of talking therapy with me:

Initial contact: You can read my website and decide to schedule an initial assessment. During the initial assessment, I will ask questions about your background, personal history, current challenges, and goals for counselling. This helps me to understand your unique situation and develop a suitable treatment plan.

Building rapport: I’ll do my best to establish trust and rapport between us. I’ll create a supportive and non-judgmental environment to encourage open communication.

Exploring thoughts and feelings: We’ll explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours related to the challenges you are facing. I may use different techniques to help you gain insight and understanding of your emotions and behaviours.

Setting goals: Together, we’ll set specific and achievable therapeutic goals. These goals guide the therapeutic process and provide direction for your personal growth and development.

Developing coping strategies: I will help you develop healthier coping mechanisms to deal with difficult emotions and life situations. If appropriate I may teach relaxation techniques (e.g. mindfulness), etc.

Uncovering patterns: You may discover patterns of thinking or behaviour that contribute to your challenges.

Challenging beliefs: I will help you identify and challenge negative or unhelpful beliefs you hold about yourself, others, the world, or the future.

Support and validation: I’ll provide emotional support and validation. Feeling understood and heard can be a significant source of comfort and healing.

Progress and endings: We’ll regularly assess your progress toward your goals. When you feel you have achieved your objectives or made significant improvements, we’ll conclude the counselling process with a therapy review session.

My first session

Our first session will be an initial evaluation session costing £25 and is bookable via my website HTTP://bestlifecounselling.co.uk.  You can choose to do this online or face-to-face in Leamington Spa.

The purpose of this initial evaluation session is for me to collect relevant information, for us both to determine whether we can work together, to start to educate you about my approach (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)), to decide whether we're going to work together and what the next steps are.

How I determine whether I can work with you is based on my assessment of my competence to work with you and my availability.  How I encourage you to determine whether you can work with me is whether you think you can collaborate effectively with me (as research shows that therapeutic results are related to effective collaboration).

The agenda for this session will be something like:-

- establish limits of confidentiality

- complete the standard depression and anxiety questionnaire

- discuss at a high level what brought you to therapy

- discuss what you'd like to achieve out of therapy

- describe some of the key points of CBT

- give some idea of treatment expectations (duration and typical inventions)

- summary

- next steps + action planning

- garner sessional feedback
