About me and my therapy practice

My name is Phoebe Clausen-Sternwald

I specialise in:

Pregnancy & Infant Loss

Cancer/Life limiting Illness Counselling

End of life family Support

Grief & Bereavement Counselling

Traumatic & Complex grief

Depression & Anxiety

Relationship Difficulties after loss

Grief is the change we didn’t want, the loss of a planned future.

I have been a healthcare professional for nearly 30 years. First as a nurse, then a Counsellor & Psychotherapist, I have had the opportunity to learn about my patients/clients’ lives, and their stories, beyond their physical illnesses.

I specialise in Cancer support, Grief, Complex & Traumatic Loss, as well as Pregnancy & Infant Loss, including bereaved parents who have lost their adult children.

Loss of health can also result in deep grief. While working with cancer patients, I observed the links between long-term emotional stress and physical “dis-eases”. Over the last three decades, many academic and clinical researchers have revealed that the mental/emotional health is inseparable from physical health.

I see the diagnosis of cancer/ life limiting illnesses as a reminder and an opportunity to re-evaluate our life. When emotional well-being improves, live expectancy and quality improve with it. It’s never too late to start LIVING FULLY.

Practice description

Everyone’s grief story and grieving process is unique. It’s impossible to do it wrong because grief has no agenda.

These are the common things my clients have said to me:

“My family is grieving too, I don’t want to upset them more or make it harder for them.”

“I just keep myself very busy, just have to get on with it.”

“People asked me if I have gotten over it, it makes me feel very angry.”

“I can’t help but keep thinking about what more I should have done.”

“I felt so guilty when I laughed the other day.”

“I am so worried that my cancer will come back. I have lost my confidence.”

“When people said at least you have other children, or at least you are still young enough to get pregnant again. I just want to scream.”

“I stopped seeing some friends because I just find talking about pop music, fashion and holidays meaningless.”

“My husband/wife and I didn’t talk about the end of life and funeral, it was too uncomfortable and we don’t want to be sad in front of each other. I now wish we did have that talk. “

You don’t have to grieve in isolation. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. I am here to help you grieve fully and live fully.

My work is trauma informed, it’s an integration of Humanistic Integrative Counselling, CBT, Mindfulness, Imagery and Trauma releasing bodywork. Whatever the pain and suffering you are experiencing, I will walk side by side with you. Therapy can’t change what happened to you, but you will find invaluable growth through gaining new perceptions on what happened to you.
